Sophie welcomed the darkness.
She knew she should fight against it, but it offered a retreat from the madness going on inside her frenzied mind. Her golden cocoon of mental energy kept her protected from dangerous worries floating around in her consciousness. She knew if she fully opened her mind to the truths that had been revealed, she would break.
An army of hu—
Sophie sent a blast of her golden energy at the thought before it could fully form, and it dissolved into the darkness. But it left her weak. Sophie sunk down deeper into the unknown gloom.
It may have been pitch black where she hid, but it was a peaceful darkness. It was cold and empty yet somehow comforting at the same time.
A pair of ice blue eyes flashed through her mind. Sophie knew she recognized them from somewhere, but it was hard to place. She shoved them away with another blast of mental power, but it was no use. They came back again, glowing brighter, the blue illuminating the darkness.
Keefe.
As the name clicked in her mind, so did something else. She felt a connection form between her and someone, but she didn't know who, or what. Yet she did find herself subconsciously repeating a single name.
Outside of her golden shield she could make out glimpses of blue and green. They rode closer to her like waves, moving in sync. They crashed up against her gilded protection, then folded over each other and retreated.
Sophie panicked.
What was trying to tear down her shield? The barrier was protecting her. Yet the turquoise breezes made a feeling of calm and familiarity wash over her. As they returned, she lowered her guard by the slightest, experimenting with what would happen if they reached her.
The blue and green passed through her golden shield, and instantly steadied Sophie's swirling mind. She realized she was still repeating his name as the second wave floated gracefully to meet her. The green and blue broke down her protection, slowly, reassuringly, lovingly, coaxing her out of her shell. She was afraid the mind-shattering thoughts would come back to her, but the coloured breezes chased them away.
Soon her golden cocoon disappeared, and all that was left was Sophie sitting in her consciousness. She watched as the green and blue breezes drifted away, out of her sight.
Better? she heard someone ask.
The voice echoed around her mind as she realized who it was coming from.
Keefe. She found herself thinking.
Keefe. She knew who that was. A handsome face formed in her thoughts as she slowly came out of her stupor.
See ya later, Foster, she heard him say. It was quiet for a moment longer before a few words quickly darted through her consciousness. Love you, they said.
Color exploded everywhere in Sophie's mind.
The words woke her up completely, and now she was desperate for his voice to fill her head again.
Keefe? She thought. There was no answer. Keefe? Keefe! Are you there?
She searched her mind, but she couldn't find him anywhere. Suddenly she heard another name being called.
Sophie! Sophie can you hear me?
She recognized the name as hers.
Sophie? Sophie!
Sophie checked her mind one more time for Keefe, hoping he'd still be there. She called out for him again, but he was gone.
She paused for a moment to rally up enough confidence to return to the real world, then slowly felt her brain connect back to her body.
Sophie could feel her heartbeat in her chest, her fingers resting against something soft, and the drop of her stomach that felt like when you get off a roller coaster.
Sophie gasped and her eyes flew open.
A/N: sorry I know this chapter is super short, I promise the next one will be longer ;) I've actually already written the next two chapters but they need LOTS of editing XD
