Gone.
Gone.
Gone.
Keefe's head was spinning.
He couldn't breathe.
He couldn't think clearly as a blind rage shot him forward and before he knew what was happening he had a throwing star pressed against his mother's neck.
Every part of him was shaking, his hands were trembling, eyes darting all around in search of other Neverseen members. "What did you do to her," Keefe snarled.
Lady Gisela didn't seem fazed in the slightest. "Nothing yet," she replied honestly. "But you should have remembered that obscurers can be detected and manipulated. The moonlark will be joining the rest of the Council shortly."
Keefe could feel his chest rising and falling rapidly. "I swear to God," he told his mother, his voice dangerous. "If you hurt her, I will drive this throwing star through your neck."
"Oh, but I don't think you will," Lady Gisela said simply. "You really think you could live with the guilt of killing your own mother?"
She didn't say anything else, just watched Keefe with a sickening gaze, her awful smile searing into his memory. His hands were shaking, palms sweating as he held the cold metal against the skin of her neck. A red haze was consuming him, everything all around, the anger inside him so strong he would have done anything to hurt his mother the way she'd hurt him.
He pressed the blade harder, but not enough to draw blood. Lady Gisela sucked in a small breath—it was barely noticeable, but Keefe spotted it instantly. "Where's Sophie," he demanded.
"Join me, and I'll let her, as well as the Councillors, go."
"It doesn't seem like you're in a position to bargain," Keefe said.
"Really?" his mother cocked an eyebrow. "If you think I couldn't have you pinned under my own weapon in a matter of seconds then you're more foolish than I thought."
"I said," Keefe repeated, testing the limits of the throwing star. "Where's Sophie."
Lady Gisela sighed. "You know, I didn't want to have to do this, but I guess I don't have a choice."
Before Keefe realized what was happening, she snapped her fingers and black cloaks jumped from the sky and levitated down to the ground, circling him and his mother. All of the members had their hoods up, and the silence that followed was terrifying.
Keefe didn't say a word.
Only sucked in a breath as his gaze dashed from member to member.
An awful churning feeling was destroying his gut.
This wasn't supposed to happen.
None of this was supposed to happen.
And now he had no idea how he was supposed to get out of this situation.
Keefe slowly backed away from his mother, lowering the throwing star.
Lady Gisela only smirked. "I knew it. You're weak. This is why you need me. My help." She raised her arms towards the crumbling city behind her and Neverseen surrounding them. "All of this can be avoided; all I want to do is help you."
"You're lying," Keefe spat. "You just want my ability for yourself."
"If I wanted it for myself I would have given it to myself." His mother rested both of her hands on his shoulders. Keefe flinched and tried to jerk away but she gripped tightly. "I wanted you to have it, so you could live up to your full potential. To make your life better."
