Keefe was sick of being stuck inside.
Apparently the whole news story about him in New York had died down, but Kalea was being annoyingly strict about what he was allowed to do. He could only go outside when he was doing 'training' with Evren for Kalea's 'big plan'.
It was so irritating. Keefe felt restless, pacing around the little apartment with nothing to do. It gave him lots of time with his thoughts, making him jittery. He didn't want time to think, since the things he thought about were impossibly far away and only made his heart ache more.
Keefe had considered leaving these people a few times but never acted on it. He figured he had a better chance with food and shelter than on his own.
Currently, he was milling around the apartment, not really doing anything. He'd looked for Evren already but couldn't find her. Ethan was asleep, snoring loudly. The old guy never seemed to have much to do with anything
Keefe had tried a ridiculous amount of times to learn something about the old guy's son, but Ethan usually answered with one word or a grunt. So Keefe had given up on that.
The longer he stayed here the more nervous he felt. He didn't know why, but a gut feeling kept telling him something about the whole situation was off. He just couldn't place his finger on what.
Keefe peeked his head through doorways, searching for something exciting to do, but there wasn't really anything. He ended up going back to the living room and staring out the dismal window.
People passed by on the street like any other day: going on a run, walking their dogs, human kids playing in the road. Keefe wanted so badly to go outside, if at least for something to do. Who knew running away could be so boring.
Then an idea hit him.
Keefe scanned the room, but there was still no one around. He felt a smile creep up his face as he snuck out into the hallway, wincing every time a floorboard creaked. He could see the door on the other end, his anticipation only growing as he got closer. Keefe didn't know how in the world he hadn't thought to simply sneak out earlier.
Keefe had almost reached the door when the sound of voices caught his attention.
He stopped, straining his ears to where the noise had come from. It seemed like it was coming from his left, but there were no rooms to the left of him, only the wall.
Keefe crept closer, pressing his ear against the old wallpaper to try and listen. The voices were muffled through the wall, and it was nearly impossible to hear anything.
"She's here?"
"...opportunity... act now."
Keefe racked his brain to try and figure it out. Could there be a secret room? A secret door?
"Our best chance...send them immediately...before she's gone."
That was all he could make out before the sound of footsteps stole his breath.
Keefe didn't hesitate. He quickly reached the green door, relieved to find it unlocked, then slipped outside.
The sunlight hit up the moment he exited the apartment, bright and shining right into his eyes. Keefe squinted, holding a hand up, then quickly descended down the few stairs and onto the street.
He kept his head down and his hood up until he reached the end of the road where there were fewer people out. Keefe paused, unsure what to do now. He'd made it out of the apartment, but he didn't actually know London. And knowing himself, he'd probably get lost.
