Chapter 16

Kimberley’s POV

We’ve been shown to a room and I’m sat up in the bed, mine and Cheryls hands are still tightly clasped together.

‘Mrs Tweedy-Walsh’ Alan walks in the room, ‘We have informed the nurses here on your situation and they will be with you momentarily for a scan.’

‘Okay, thank you’ I smile politely through my nerves and he leaves.

‘How are you feeling?’ I hear her soft voice break the silence.

‘Sick’ I reply bluntly.

‘Because of your nerves?’ she asks hesitantly and I nod my head, a tear rolling down my cheek.

Silently, she stands up, probably not knowing what else to do. She feels useless and I can see it. I can see in her eyes she wants to help, but she doesn’t know how she can.

‘Can I get you anything? A drink?’

‘Could you get us a drink of water maybe?’

‘Sure’ she nods, quickly hurrying over to the door.

I’m not that bothered about the water, but I feel the need to keep her occupied, she’ll start pacing and rambling if she doesn’t have anything to do. I smile when I think about how she worries and the ways she subconsciously tells you she is worrying.

The smile drops when I feel something, a tiny fist or foot pushing against my stomach.

‘Chez wait!’ I shriek and she spins around, quickly moving back to my side.

‘What’s wrong?’

I quickly calm myself down, remembering that she has never felt our baby kick before. This is her first time.

‘Come here’ I reach out for her hand, placing it on my stomach.

But nothing happens. No kick, no movement.

Cheryl looks at me with a blank expression.

‘Do you feel anything?’ I ask, though I already know the answer.

‘What? You mean you’re stomach expanding?’ she asks sarcastically with a confused smirk, ‘I already know you’re pregnant Kim’

She slides her hand from underneath mine and moves towards the door again.

‘No, h...’ she turns around to look at me and I sigh, ‘It doesn’t matter... they’ll be in for the scan soon so you better hurry up’

‘Right, I’ll be five minutes’ and with that she is gone.

I look down at my belly. I’m sure I felt movement; the baby pretty much never sits still. That’s how I know something is wrong.

To be honest, I haven’t really felt that much movement over the past day or two, not while Cheryl has been around anyway; else I would have told her so she could feel it.

But when I was locked in the cupboard before, the kicking was constant, like he was doing summersaults. That was probably when the fumes from the bleach were slowly suffocating him. My baby.

‘Here you go’ I jump when I hear Cheryls voice beside me.

‘Jeez, when you said five minutes you really meant it’ I chuckle.

‘There was a family room at the end of the ward so I just got your drink from in there’ she explains, handing me a plastic cup, ‘Is that okay?’

‘Yeah it’s fine’ I smile as I accept the simple drink, placing it on the bedside cabinet, ‘I was worried you would be back in time if you went down to the shop.’
