Chapter 23
3 months later
'Kim, do you want a cuppa?' I call from the kitchen.
'Only if you use Tabasco sauce instead of milk' she calls back grumpily.
I chuckle to myself at her comment.
Kimberley is a month past her due date now and she's going out of her mind. So am I to be honest, only I'm hiding it.
She has been trying everything recommended, particularly spicy food, hence the Tabasco request. The only thing I haven't been willing to try is us having sex. When there was less than a month till her due date, I didn't want to bring on the labour too soon, so we've not had sex since then, but now that we are passed her due date, I feel more pressured, like it is now my responsibility to bring the labour on.
I know I'm being ridiculous. I know it isn't my responsibility. The midwife came to see her yesterday and told us that if she doesn't go into labour by next week, she will have to have an induced labour.
I walk back into the living room, carrying my cup of tea, to find Kimberley sat on the couch, looking pretty moody.
'Cheer up buttercup' I smile sweetly as I sit down, putting my mug on the table and my arm around her.
'Piss off chez.' Comes her grouchy reply.
'Woah, sorry' I mumble, rolling my eyes as I retract my arm and shuffle away, putting some space between us.
She releases a long, heavy sigh and rubs her eyes. She looks at me with an apologetic but tired look and reaches her hand to rest on my thigh.
'I'm sorry chez, I just want this fcuking baby out of me' she apologises and I smile at her as I shuffle back over.
'I know babe, just be patient, he'll be in our arms soon.' Hearing this, an excited grin spreads across her face.
'And we'll be able to hold him, cuddle him, sing to him, play with him' she snuggles into me, her smile still adorning her face, 'wake up at stupid o'clock to feed him and change his nappy'
'Well it started off sounding great... but you kinda lost me at the end' I cringe at her, crinkling my nose and causing her to chuckle.
'Thank you' she sighs.
'For what?' I look down at her in my arms, my brow furrowing.
'Cheering me up? and being so patient'
'Kim, if either of us is being patient here it's you' I smile, kissing her forehead, 'I know you're fed up, but he'll be here in no time.'
'You said that last month' her tone changes and her face turns into a scowl.
It's obvious she is in a mood again, thanks to me and my big mouth.
But her face quickly changes, looking a little relieved but pained as she sits up a little.
'Ah' She yelps as she places her hand on the bump.
'What is it?' I ask cautiously watching as she tenderly touches her bump. 'A contraction?'
'No...' she frowns again as she falls back down into the couch, 'I don't think so. He was probably just kicking.'
I sit back again, probably feeling as deflated as she does.
'Why isn't he ready? What if something's wrong?' to my surprise she isn't in a bad mood, just a sad one, as her eyes fill up to clarify my findings.
'Kimba, please don't get upset. If there was anything wrong, the midwife would have picked up on it, or sent you to get checked over, the other day when she came by.' I attempt to calm her as I kiss her temple. 'Don't worry'
