*** Quinn's POV ***
I ended up staying at my mom's. We had a great night and she kept my mind off wondering what Joyce was up to. It was only as I was trying to fall asleep that my mind drifted to her. I wanted to text her good night, but resisted. Didn't want to come across as too needy.
I'm standing by the window sipping coffee, waiting for my girl to arrive the next morning.
"You're like a kid waiting to catch a glimpse of Santa on Christmas." My mom muttered, patting my ass.
"Mom, I think...I think I love her. Is it too soon?" I asked.
Mom looked at me and rubbed my cheek. "What makes you think this is love?"
"I feel so damn eager to see her again, even after I just leave her. When I'm not with her, I wonder what she's up to. She makes me think about the things I do and question how I can do better by her. I want to protect her, but also respect her strength. She..." I gushed without hesitation.
"Yep, Quinn. I think it is safe to say. You're in love." My mom laughed. "And you haven't even doinked her yet, have you?"
"Mom!" I groaned.
She turned serious. "Quinn, I know she has a past. You'll have to be patient and even once she gets there, she will always carry that past with her."
"She told you?" I questioned, a little miffed by this information.
"She didn't have to." My mom replied cryptically. I wanted to follow up, but Joyce pulled into the driveway and tooted her horn.
I gave my mom a lopsided grin and basically trotted out to greet Joyce. She had her passenger side window down and greeted me. "Hey Quinn, I brought a box of things to add to the sale. I hope that's okay. Can you grab it and then I'll go park on the street?"
She looked tired. I nodded and moved toward the trunk, but then thought better of it and double-backed. I opened her passenger door and sank into the seat, reaching across the console and cupping her face to direct it to mine before she could ask any questions. I met her lips with the conviction of a man who had just confessed to his mother why he was in love. I felt pride in claiming her as my love. Although I wasn't yet ready to tell her, I hope that she felt it and wasn't scared by it.
I pulled back, but kept my hand on her cheek. She smiled and slowly lifted her eyelids to grace me with her olive green eyes. She whispered. "Thank you. I needed that."
"You never have to thank me. I just missed you is all." I kissed her warm cheek and then the other before moving back to her lips.
"Morning, Joyce." Mom said through the open passenger window. She was such a cockblock as Joyce tore her lips from mine.
"Good morning, Ruth. I brought a box of stuff to contribute. I hope you don't mind." She asked my mom. I was half- tempted to demand her attention back by kissing along her neck, but I restrained myself knowing it would further embarrass Joyce.
"No problem, sweetie. Once Quinn is done checking your mouth for cavities with his tongue, he can grab it for you." My mom retorted smugly. I leaned back in the passenger seat and sighed dramatically, rolling my eyes.
"I'll grab the damn box." I mumbled.
"Thanks, Quinn." Joyce said as I exited the car, glaring at my mom who looked unmoved.
As I picked up the box, I noticed that there was an old jewelry box, some empty photo frames that were bright colors and cheap like what a teen would have, and a ring box, along with some other things. I set the box down and was curious about the contents of the ring box.
