It all felt like a dream.
Before I knew it, New Years had come and gone. It was now January 10th. It was 11am. A car had been sent out to bring me to the big city. I guess this show was gonna be bigger than they let on in the meetings. Us contestants were being put up in a big, empty hotel. One to each room.
Roger sat with me in the backseat, looking irritated and bored, as if I was wasting his time solely by being beside him.
The drive was long. He spent a great deal of time staring out the window and tapping on his phone. Anything to avoid looking at me, perhaps.
At some point I finally got up the courage to look at him. Andrew never let me look at men. He told me that if I did, my female brain would fantasize and he'd be force to leave me.
He was looking intently at something on his phone. His fingers paused their tapping only momentarily. I wondered what he could be doing that was so important.
It felt intrusive to look. I always avoided it. It was wrong to. If I had to be face to face with someone, I'd always look at their ears. Or their nose. Often their shoulders, or whatever was behind them. Never the face. It was wrong.
But here I was.
I noticed his shoes first. They were boring. Not just man-in-suit boring, but old, scuffed, and worn.
His suit was dirty. It had clearly been worn too much. In fact, the longer I looked, I realized that his suit was too big, which seemed impossible. I hadn't noticed before, but Roger was tall. His tie was crooked.
I was about to raise my gaze to his face when he turned to look at me. I averted my eyes. My heart was pounding.
"When we get there, they will take your bags for you. Follow them to your room and stay there until you receive the next set of instructions."
"How long will that take?" I asked.
"As long as it takes." he answered.
Before long, we pulled up to the front of the hotel.
There were security cameras everywhere I looked.
A group of people walked out the door and opened my door.
Roger turned to me.
"This is a good opportunity. Don't screw it up."
And with that I was rushed out of the car and into the building.
