Chapter 3
When they peeked out of the windows the next time, it was beginning to darken. Dawn approached them. The infected began to awaken. Not that they could see them, but they knew it.
Brett locked the door after he checked the fire carefully, only to see that it was already extinguished on its own. He crept back to Eddy and secured the door.
"The sun is setting. Let's get something to eat upstairs and eat in the bedroom," he whispered. Now they had to be careful again. No more loud noises and no more fun, only business.
Eddy simply nodded to reduce the sounds they would make. He didn't trust the ground level as much as he trusted the upstairs. Hopefully it would all be okay though. Surviving was very nice.
Brett took two cans of peaches and two of pears as well as two safe water bottles and packed it in his backpack to bring it upstairs. He motioned with his thumb to the stairs, signalling his wish to go up there. They already cleaned the forks, spoons and such, so they could eat upstairs with ease.
Before he actually went up, he risked another peek from behind the dark cloth he put up. Yes, they already wandered, he saw them at the border of the woods. Still far away, but it was enough to see them. He motioned without haste to Eddy that he saw one; now they would be even more quiet than before.
Eddy frowned at that, of course this was no safe haven but it would be nice if those darned creatures wouldn't come here. For goodness sakes, there were probably better places for them to look for food. His hand immediately landed on his katana as he backed up towards the stairs to be safe.
When they stood side by side at the bottom of the stairs Brett whispered to him, "They are still far away, on the border of the woods, take food and what else you want with you and then upstairs. They are slow as of now, but we should hurry."
He laid his cheek against Eddy's and started the way up. They would make this way most likely one more time to get all the things they needed for a hasty retreat, if they were forced to. But Brett had hope that this house would serve them another night as a bed as well. They survived in here with infected inside, so why would they fail with every possible precaution they took?
Eddy made sure he had what he needed before he followed Brett up the stairs. He stayed behind the elder, wanting to guard his back just in case. Showing one's back to the enemy was a very dangerous action, even if there was no enemy in sight as of now. To let down their guard would be foolish so this extra precaution wouldn't hurt.
They were careful to make absolutely no noise when they finally went upstairs and Brett locked the door with the chair again. They sat on the semi-clean floor so their backs rested against the bed and Brett took out their rations. Before popping them open, he checked their surroundings. He took extra care to get all the blankets from the other rooms and place them against the windows and the door for better sound-proofing, so they could actually whisper to each other and no sound would travel outside. Tomorrow he would cover the walls in blankets and cloths and maybe even the mattresses of the unused bedrooms as well so they could scream and not be heard.
He very gently opened one lid.
The first plop was terribly loud in their ears. It always was. But after they waited with their bated breaths and heard nothing, Brett resumed the task and quickly opened a can each. They still had jerky for some variety in their diet. It was no grand meal, but it filled their bellies.
Brett leaned against Eddy after they finished and laid his head on his shoulder.
"I will take the first shift," he whispered. Eddy could get a full sleep cycle. Brett would wake him if something happened.
