The sun's earliest rays had just peaked over the horizon as Meilani approached her village. She couldn't see the sun through the dense emerald forestry. Although, magenta and indigo hues peppered the western morning skies. From the east she could see lilac clouds and the sun changing the sky to a red-orange. The morning dawn had just about peaked by the time she reached the pink tinted walls of the approaching village; the Hidden Leaf.
She inhaled deeply, the smell of damp earth in her nostrils left a tingle in her nose. Meilani let out a short exhale that could have been mistaken for a hushed cry of relief. She shook away the overwhelming nostalgia, deep teal curls shaking with her head.
The wind blew past her with more force, towards the gates. Her purple cloak clung to the back of her body and the rest of it fluttered ahead of her. Even the strands of the village band tied around her neck, and the bell sleeves of her purple blouse were pushed forward. When the wind calmed she blew her hair away from her round face in a huff.
Soft crunches of wet dirt pressed under her knee-high boots. With them, she wore black leggings and under her blouse rested long sleeved mesh armor.
The closer she was to the gates, the damper her palms became. Would anyone recognize her? Part of her hoped not. Her curls flowed softly with the wind, and she found herself twirling the ends of a few hair strands between her fingertips. Once in sight of the guards, she dropped the telling behavior. The two chunin posted at the gate sleepily eyed her. The one with spikey black hair and a bandage crossing his nose and cheekbones sat up and squinted at the approaching figure.
"Meilani? Is that you?"
The jonin gave a polite, close-eyed smile. "Good morning, Kotetsu, Izumo."
"Holy hell, how long has it been?" Izumo chuckled, sitting up with a newfound energy.
"Almost 5 years, I think." She answered, hand moving to her hip casually.
"It's good to see you," They both answered. Kotetsu opened his mouth to speak but was beaten to the punch by his companion.
"I don't think Lord Third is even awake yet. The shops are barely gonna open up."
"Gives me time to go home and see what mess is waiting for me. See you boys around."
She waved goodbye and continued her walk home. The smell of coffee made her question if she should buy breakfast or cook it at home. Remembering her brother, she decided to check her coin pouch and see what she can make out of what remained.
She recognized none of the market salespeople, at least none in the shops she visited. Once she purchased everything she needed, Meilani headed home.
Walking through the streets of Konoha felt comforting, especially after a tedious and failure of a mission. Mei smiled as she walked up the steps to her old townhouse, and sighed contently at her adoptive family's crest on the doors. She paused just before unlocking the door, taking a shaky breath. What if he had become angry towards her?
Meilani pushed the thought aside, and quietly made her way through.
Surprisingly, her little brother wasn't there, although he definitely made it known the place was lived in. She covered her nose and gagged at the sight; days old food stuck in bowls scattered across the floor. Dirty clothes littered every other surface of the place. The air smelled of sweaty socks and stale ramen.
"The place is a pigsty." She muttered, immediately opening all windows and curtains. "And judging by the half-eaten cereal here, Naruto hasn't been home in days."
In 30 minutes, Meilani had thrown out all trash, placed all of her brothers laundry in his basket (with the help of gloves), dusted, and swept. Since it seemed to be just her, she made herself a bowl of brown sugar oatmeal with a side of mixed berries. She glanced around nervously, her stomach burbling with unease. She realized she had nearly greeted her brother empty-handed, and baked a few dozen blueberry muffins.
I guess traveling took more out of me than I thought.
Meilani sighed to herself as she wiped the final section of the kitchen, completing the last of her cleaning frenzy. She checked the time and nodded, tucking half a dozen muffins away in a small basket and covered them with a light, clean kitchen cloth. She quickly showered, washing away the weariness of her travels. After, Mei paused in the middle of fixing her hair and smiled as she looked at herself in the mirror, giggling to herself at the sight of a face previously smudged onto the mirror by her brother. Changing into her Shinobi uniform, and gathering her thick collection of reports, she headed towards her Lord Hokage's office.
