What a strange year it has turned out to be for Kakashi. The first group of genin to pass his bell test had also entered the Chunin Exams that same year. He never thought that the very same team would be the force pulling him out of the darkness. Or the glue that brought him and Meilani back together, even with Naruto involved. And now, further into that year, he and Mei were making eyes at each other from opposite sides of the bar. It was subtle, Mei would give him a playful smile and he'd give a coy brow raise with a side glance. Even in the dimly lit building, she noticed his eye flicker downward and his chin tilt down. A sure sign of him blushing behind that mask.
My Princess...To think that in the beginning of this year she wanted nothing to do with him. Rightfully so, to this day he regrets the words he said to her that night. To say he's grateful to be hers, and for her to be his, was an understatement. Because watching her sway her hips and giggle on the dancefloor without a care in the world filled his chest with a sense of pride, and something else he couldn't quite put his finger on. It was almost like the comforting warmth of a fire, at the center of his chest.
Asuma watched his friend lean back and admire Meilani dancing with a grin.
"Gotta say, I'm surprised about you two." He commented, swirling his beer around. Kakashi chuckled, clinking his own beer with Asuma's."I think we're just as surprised."
He would be lying if he said he didn't feel hesitation as they held hands leaving the ramen shop. Not for publicly becoming official, but for Naruto's reaction. He knew how energetic Naruto could be, yet after revealing their relationship to him, the young boy burst with an energy that scared the both of them.
"How'd Naruto take it?"
Kakashi brows creased at the memory. "He nearly crushed my spine as he hugged me. And I think he might've popped a blood vessel."
Asuma chortled. "Well, you better get used to it. Does Guy know yet?"
Kakashi shook his head. "He's been out on a mission. Mei's worried that the gossip will get to him before we do."
Shortly after saying goodbye to Naruto, Meilani pulled Kakashi into an alley. She wanted to confirm once more if this was something he was ready to do.
With you by my side, I'm ready for anything. He told her. Mei smiled in content as he kissed her forehead, taking her hand once more. For a moment they watched one another, and Kakashi felt his heart racing for no particular reason. It was then he realized that despite telling Naruto that they are now together, he never officially asked her.
Will you be mine? Officially? He asked timidly, his voice hardly above a murmur. Mei slid her hand up to his shoulder and upon his cheek.
I'd love to be yours, and only yours. She answered, pulling him down gently to kiss his nose. Come on, let's go for a walk.
Meilani's grip was tighter than Kakashi's as they walked through the streets of Konoha. Her curls flowed through the breeze, giving an almost dancing effect behind her. She could see the widening eyes and the muttered conversations. He held onto her tighter, nudging her when he spotted a beaming Kurenai and perplexed Asuma.
The four spent the next few hours together. First for dinner, and then drinks and dancing. Kakashi was unsure, but he couldn't deny Mei after seeing her excitement."I won't lie to you, he's been suspicious. But, i'm sure he'll be happy for you two."
Before Kakashi could ask what he meant, Meilani and Kurenai rejoined their booth. She grinned as his arm leisurely wrapped around her waist and pulled her closer to him.
"We probably shouldn't be out too much later." Kurenai said disappointedly. "Both of us have a meeting with Lady Tsunade in the morning."
"Oh, shit. I was supposed to meet with her and Jiraiya!" Mei sat up with haste. "Ugh, she's gonna kick my ass. I have to go,"
"I'll walk you."
Kakashi quickly paid and they all said their goodnights. Meilani dragged Kakashi with haste towards the Hokage's office.
"You're already late, what's a few more-"
"I can already hear the embarrassing sex jokes. Let's go."
Kakashi turned scarlet and let her drag him all the way outside of Tsunade's office. She took a deep breath to calm her breathing and shook her hair out. He waited outside the doors as she entered nonchalantly.
"Good evening, Auntie. Papa Jiraiya."
Jiraiya was leaning back on Tsunade's chair, feet on the desk while she sat on the windowsill. The air smelled of smoke and sake, and the two Sanin eyed her flushed skin tone. "I'm sure Inoichi has filled you in on all the general stuff I got from the interviews."
