Kakashi continued to glance at Mei every couple of yards. Flashes of green whipped passed them as they sprinted from branch to branch. While he hasn't sniffed out any enemy chakra since they left town a few hours before, he still wanted to keep his guard up.
Meilani hadn't spoken a word since they left the Inn. If she noticed Kakashi's worried glances, she didn't comment on them. She continued to stare ahead, breathing in the scents of pine and tree sap. It wasn't until an hour later, when she felt a spine chill she shuddered."Kakashi-"
"I sense them. Go faster."
Meilani did what he ordered, her heart rate increasing. She hated herself for feeling so afraid, but she knew nothing of why these men were chasing her now. When she grabbed Habiki, she saw flashes of a kingdom on fire. Her frightened mother and her companion fleeing on a boat pushed by Habiki into a harbor. His hand reaching out to her as she cradled a crying child, her mother reaching her hand out as a final goodbye. With tears streaming down her face.
She didn't want to know what would happen if they got to her.
"Use your sprint." Kakashi tried to hide the shakiness in his voice. Something about this situation left a pit in his stomach. He had to shove aside unwanted flashbacks and focus on sensing how many there are.
I only sense two... But I can't locate exactly where.Meilani wanted to look back at Kakashi, but her gut told her not to. As she sprinted once more, she slowed down slightly and summoned her two hummingbirds, Hachi and Dory.
"Find them." The two birds zoomed upwards and darted in different directions. She could hear the waterfall nearby, and she sprinted once more. A few yards later, she heard the snap of a branch on her right. Dory then came darting from that direction, whistling at a pitch only Mei can hear.
Kakashi jumped to her right and threw a paper bomb in that direction.
Hachi darted passed Mei's head from the front.
"Go up!" The bird cried. Meilani ran up the next tree, Kakashi following closely behind. As they began to jump from the tops of the tree, she threw a few more paper bombs behind.
Goosebumps ran across Mei's body when a burst of frosty air hit her chest. She gasped at the sudden chill that spread from the front of her torso outward. Instinctively, she hunched over and covered herself from the shock.
Kakashi grunted as he blocked a shuriken with his arm, saving Meilani from a deep gash in her cheek. He caught her as she lost her footing from slipping on a snow-covered tree."Snow?" He continued to jump from branch to branch. "We should be near the border."
Mei tried to free herself, but he held on to her tighter. She glanced at his furrowed brows while he continued to speak out loud.
"If we're this close, there should be scouts nearby."
"That was before the attack, remember? We tightened our perimeter." Mei warned, draping her arms firmly around his neck.
He nearly forgot. "Damn it."
Mei yelled in surprise when Kakashi's eyes turned to a yellow and black honeycomb pattern. He cried out in pain and tripped on his next branch. He blindly waved his arm around for a falling Mei. Luckily, she managed to catch her balance and caught him over her shoulders.
"Everything's.... Shattered." He blinked harshly to try and stop it. "Like I'm staring into a broken mirror. I'm going to be sick."
"Keep your eyes closed." Her two summons began to circle her rapidly, creating a wind-like shield. Mei grabbed Kakashi's face and tried to release the jutsu. Two ninja appeared and slashed at the barrier to no avail.
"It's worse with my eyes closed." He gagged at the bright colors dancing across his vision. "Now it's like a kaleidoscope.""Focus on my nose." He opened his eyes and focused on the Mei in the center. He fought the urge to look at her eyes, and stared at the tip of her nose. Eventually, his vision tunneled and the hallucination shattered to reveal reality. He stood and grabbed his right elbow with his left hand. "Get back. Chidori!"
Mei hit the floor, covering her head. Hachi and Dory darted towards the two ninja faces and pecked them between their eyebrows. Kakashi pierced the white haired Kunoichi's chest first, fist clenching as she weakly tried her kaleidoscope jutsu once more. She let out a bloody gurgle as he yanked away. He steadied his breathe searching for the other one.
