Guy was on his 80th lap around the village when the sun had began to rise. His steady pants and heavy jogging steps made it easy for Meilani to hear over her meditative humming. When she teleported in front of him with her arms crossed, he offered an ignorant smile.
"Good morning, Meilani!"
"Good morning, Guy. Can we speak now or are you going to keep avoiding me?"
When she refused to move out of the way he paused and continued to jog in place.
"I'm not avoiding you. I am also not going to apologize for intervening.""You could have been killed."
"And you could have too, and I simply cannot allow that." He stopped jogging and dramatically swayed his arm in a cutting motion beside them. "I made that vow in our youth. I intend to keep it until my last breath!"
"Guy, I'm serious." Her voice faltered slightly as her throat constricted. She spoke again with a firm voice. "Look at what happened to Kakashi. The only reason I'm okay is because I prepared for years to see Itachi again. And I barely broke through. If he got to you, what would have happened?"
Guy's smile began to fade. "I may be young, but I'm not a child. Please don't treat me as such."
She looked off to the side, annoyed. He took her silence as a reason to continue.
"You're upset because I threw myself in front of you to protect you, right?"
"Basically..." She felt her arms tense, wary of his leading tone.
"And yet didn't you do the same for Kakashi?"
"That's a bone I have to pick with him once he's awake."
He crossed his arms. "Did you or did you not?"
His expression was no longer his usual bright and cheerful one. His thick eyebrows were tugged lower, and his lips were pressed together slightly. Meilani's anger that had been building up had deflated.
"I did." She admitted.
"And why is that?"
Her jaw clenched and unclenched before she spoke.
"Because I can't let my comrades die."
He eyed her with an expression she couldn't read before he chuckled."Meilani, my sweet flower. Your talents as a kunoichi never ceases to amaze me. But that will never stop me from being your knight in shining armor."
"And that's exactly why we broke up you stubborn idiot." Her arms moved to her hips. "This is not a fairytale. I'm not a helpless Princess in need of a knight. I, like you, am a Jonin. That never changes, especially in battle." He opened his mouth to speak but Meilani raised a hand. "And you know, I've read stories where the Princess didn't need any kind of protection. I've read some where she actually saves the dumbass knight."
"But she still has a royal guard, does she not?" He grinned while she puffed out her cheeks, pinching the bridge of her nose. "I won't promise such a thing."
The anger in Meilani returned. "Might Guy, you are infuriating. If this is something I want then why do you refuse?"
"Because the one you choose to be with for the rest of your life should see the standard before they even think of pursuing you."
Mei inhaled sharply. A cold morning breezed passed through them as they stared at one another. Guy closed his eyes and sighed."I accepted long ago that our differences in opinion would keep us from ever reigniting our flame of love. However, that doesn't mean that I can't show you the bare minimum of what you deserve. If anybody is intimidated by an adoring and handsome ex-boyfriend such as myself, well, then they simply don't deserve you."
She ignored the sharp feeling in her eyes while she listened to his words. "Our oath as Shinobi come first," Mei folded her hands behind her back. "But that... That's very sweet of you, Might Guy."
He winked, and she rolled her eyes.
"By the way, Kakashi was discharged while you were on duty yesterday afternoon. He went home and went straight to bed.
She nodded. "As he should. Thank you, Guy. You call me one, but you're the real angel here... I'm sorry for being angry."
His teeth gleamed as he smiled. Mei smiled back and watched him leave before leaving herself to start her training.*****
By late noon, patrols were done and she had nothing scheduled outside the village until early tomorrow morning. The streets of Konoha were spacious, not exactly empty but it was noticable that school was returning to a regular schedule. Most groups Meilani passed had been genin and townsfolk rebuilding collapsed roofs or destroyed walls. The scent of brewing teas grew near, and she suddenly found herself craving a black tea.
Mei sat at a corner table with the view of the Hokage Monument. Besides Sarutobi's face, a large tarp covered the area that was to have Lady Fifth's. Her eyes wandered to Minato's face for a moment, before she turned her head and sipped from her cup. She closed her eyes as the warm drink traveled through her. The brisk and earthy profile of the black tea paired well with the local honey that was added in. Mei had only taken 2 sips and she felt her energy return, as well as a vengeful hunger.
She paid once she finished and walked on, wondering if she wanted ramen or sushi.
