Meilani stood attentively as the Hokage gave his congratulatory speech to the remaining teams. She eyed her brother proudly with a pressed-lip smile. His and all the rookie teams from the Leaf managed their way through the next exam phase.
"Hey, Mei look! I did it!" Naruto hollered. Sakura pulled his ear to shut him up, Mei approved with a gleeful smile, and waved at her brother.
"She's Naruto's sister?" Kiba asked his team. "They look nothing alike!"
"You don't have to be blood to be family." Shino replied, trying to focus on the Hokage's words.
"She's.... Very pretty." Hinata whispered shyly. Shino let out a mumbled agreement, earning confused looks from the other two.
"I can't believe she dated Guy-sensei." TenTen muttered. Rock Lee looked at her appalled.
"Of course she did! Only a beautiful angel would be able to truly see Guy-sensei for his amazing heart and strength!"
"What?! No way my sister ever went out with Bushier-brow sensei!"
Lord Third cleared his throat, his eyebrow twitching, before he continued. Meilani noticed Sasuke holding his shoulder, bickering with Sakura. While she understood the team argued a lot, the energy she sensed from them felt different... Off.
Kakashi also watched them, and saw Mei slide her hands behind her back, under her loose hair. He looked at the windows to see a small hummingbird land on the windows above Team 7.
She's using her bird's sight this close to the Hokage? She's going to get caught.
The kunoichi held her breath when she saw the curse mark, and the bird scurried off before taking flight.
Mei blinked, and her sight returned to her body. The milky white disappeared from her iris in time for the Hokage to bring in the preliminary matches referee. He turned to leave, and she bowed with her eyes closed. After Kakashi's turn to bow, he glanced between Mei and his team.
Now, what are you trying to see?
"Are you going to go stand with your brother?" Kurenai whispered to Mei.
"Yeah, we still hanging out tonight?"
"Yes! I'll be a little late. I promised my team a trip to Ichiraku."
"No worries, see you then."
Meilani took a deep breath, and approached Team 7 chatting with their Captain. If the curse mark is as bad as it looks, she needed to prepare herself for what may need to be done.
"Congratulations, you three. I'm very proud of you all."
Mei wrapped her arms around her brother and pulled him to her chest, squeezing him tight.
"Mei, stop! You're embarrassing me." Naruto whisper-yelled. Kakashi couldn't help but chuckle as he shoved his sister away. Before Sasuke could object, she pulled him into the same hug only much more gentle and avoiding his left shoulder.
"Are you okay?" She asked quietly. He stared at her visible arm with wide eyes.
"I'm fine." He shrugged away. She didn't push further, and gave Sakura her hug next.
"You cut your hair! It frames your face beautifully." Sakura beamed at Mei's compliment, and squeezed her tighter.
"Meilani..." Kakashi called quietly. Her throat tightened as she prepared herself. She could feel the pulse on her neck amplify.
"Yes?" She asked, looking him in the eye. For some reason, her chest felt constricted when she saw his face; it was clear some time had passed. His hair was longer, and his chiseled jaw was more defined. His eye seemed to no longer have any more coldness within. He actually looked exhausted.
He paused, forgetting momentarily what he needed to say.
"I need a word."
"Sure."
She walked a little bit away while he gave Sasuke one last piece of advice. She eyed the remaining groups from outside the Leaf. Sand village, and.... One whose band sigil she didn't recognize. Her brows tugged down when she made out the sigil to be a music note.
"I need your help," Kakashi tested his waters, appearing from just out of her peripheral vision. She looked at him again. "With a sealing jutsu."
"What do you need?" She asked, ignoring the tight feeling in her throat... And stomach. Both spoke at a normal pace, yet they both sensed a need to ask more. "Is Sasuke.... Is he in danger?"
"I believe so."
He told himself to look away, but he couldn't. Meilani kept herself together on the outside, yet all she felt like doing was running. He gave her a location and the exact details needed to set up the sealing ritual.
"Sounds easy enough." She nodded, using the motion to look away towards the Uchiha prodigy.
"Thank you." He leaned toward the direction she looked, unintentionally. She glanced back at his obsidian eye, and nodded once.
