Kakashi shuddered in his sleep from a nonexistent chill. His face contorted and his body tensed behind Meilani. Her eyes snapped to his whimpering lips and she immediately held his face to hers.
"Kakashi, wake up."
A choked sob burst against his mouth. In his sleep, Kakashi began to see the same nightmare he'd always have. This time, not only was he unable to bring himself out of it, but it was worse.
K-Kakashi-
He grit his teeth at the image of Mei bleeding from the mouth, his fist through her chest.
"Kakashi, wake up!" Mei shoved his shoulders roughly, sitting up and straddling his lap. "Beloved,"
"You should have known better, Mei." Rin spoke beside them from a distance. Kakashi gasped in horror as she approached them. The hole in her chest still dripped with blood. "Kakashi always kills the ones he's grown to love..." Vacant, lifeless eyes stared at Kakashi. "Don't you?""Kakashi!!" Mei called, the panic in her tone rising. She lifted his shoulders and slammed him down against his pillow. He woke with a jolt, sitting up with a panicked gasp.
Meilani shushed him while she held his face. Kakashi held her wrists with tightly shut eyes as he regained control of his wavering breaths. She didn't speak, she simply took slow, deep breaths against the space between his brows. The notion guided him back to the present, as well as steady his breathing. As she pressed a slow kiss to the space, he wrapped his arms tightly around her torso. His hand searched for any sign of injury on her back.
"I'm here, Stardust." She whispered. Kakashi lifted his head and searched for her eyes in the dark. But with the curtains and lack of a moon's light, he could only make out her nose shape.
"What time is it?" He removed one arm and reached for the clock that read 12:43am."Why don't I make you some tea?" She offered.
"I don't need tea. Right now I just need you."
Meilani frowned, but didn't argue. She adjusted herself as best she could under his tight grasp. Her ankles locked around the bottom of his spine and her arms stayed in place. His large hands spread his fingers as he gripped her tight. Kakashi wanted to hold as much of her as he could, engrave her scent of lavender and honey in his mind. But the nightmare was still fresh in his mind.
"Can you show me the flower field?"
She offered her palm to him and together they intertwined their fingers. Both of their eyes turned glossy black as Mei transported their minds back to the flower field. Kakashi opened his eyes to beautiful hues of reds, blues, and even some new shades of orange and pink.
"I can almost smell them." He breathed. "Your genjustu amazes me every time."
Meilani smiled, knowing that her hard work is slowly but surely paying off.
"We can stay as long as you need. Go wherever you want." They laid on their backs and began to rub circles on his chest, an effort to soothe his racing heart.
It might have been an hour before he squeezed her arm, and together they returned to her bedroom.
"Thank you." He kissed her collarbone. "I'm sorry for keeping you awake."
"I was tossing and turning anyway." She shrugged, admiring his features that normally go unseen. He stared at her with hooded eyes as she traced his facial scar. Kakashi smiled when her thumb caressed his beauty mark. He watched her fight back watery eyes, her nose scrunched. "I don't want to go.""I want to go for you." He admitted. "I know it's not my place, but if I could lead this mission instead... I wouldn't risk your life. Ever."
"I know. And you know I feel the same." She held the back of his head, just behind his ears. "So even if there was a chance, I wouldn't let you. Because this is my path, one I need to take for the village. Ingyo is too close, and hopefully once the plan is set the village is one step closer to being secure again.... And you're needed here."
She whispered the last part, a prickling sensation rising in her throat. Kakashi felt tears brim his eyes and he held the back of her head as tenderly as she held his.
"As soon as I can.... I'll follow you."
The rest of the night was spent holding each other. Staring at one another, they drunk in each others features and whispered sweet nothings. Eventually they talked about their plans for the day until mid-afternoon, when Mei had to leave.
As the hours passed the skies outside changed from an inky black to indigo. Meilani felt a need stir within the pit of her stomach. Her eyes fluttered up to meet Kakashi's open right eye. Both smiled tenderly as they recognized the look they each had; Dilated pupils, a pursing of lips and a blush over their cheeks. Kakashi moved to pull Mei under him but paused when her hands delicately laid on his chest. He rested under her, his fingers sliding under her panties and inside her. Mei gasped into his mouth, smiling against it when she reached down between them and caressed his hardness. Earning a moan from him.
She loved that beautiful sound so much.
