“Now, be good remember?” I told Gabi as she prepared herself to stroll into the school building, “Love you kiddo.” I ruffled her hair affectionately and she gave me a huge smile,
“Love you too mummy” She grinned before skipping off to meet her little friends. At least her love for school hadn’t wavered at all.
I waited around until I could no longer see her and the teachers beckoned all of the students inside. I glanced around and saw that the horrible group of mothers were stood only a few metres away. They didn’t dare speak to me anymore, not after my outburst previously. I received the odd death glare now and again but nothing I couldn’t handle.
I was actually glad that Gabi had school today because it meant I could run around ravenously trying to find some place that would hire me. I was absolutely determined to get a job as soon as possible because I wouldn’t stay in tha hotel for much longer. It’s not that it wasn’t lovely, it’s just sponging off an old woman was definitely something I didn’t feel comfortable doing for a long time. Even though, she had insisted.
Once exiting the school gates, I paced hurriedly down the street desperately looking for vacancy signs in the windows. The old woman at the B&B, whom I found was named Clara, had let me print off numerous copies of my CV so that I could hand them out to employers. At this point in time, I didn’t care what job I got as long as I got some kind of money.
With this thought in mind, I was suddenly drawn to a small corner shop with a ‘help wanted’ notice sign placed outside. As you can imagine, I shot in their straight away. I had to grab my chance quickly, although I don’t think they would have crowds of people applying for the job.
“Hello” I said confidently to the person stood behind the counter. The shop was totally empty so I didn’t feel too self-conscious in simply going straight up to him.
“Alright, how can I help?”
“I saw that there were jobs going?” I said hopefully, praying that it hadn’t already been filled.
“Oh right, yeah… you looking to apply?”
“Um yes, here’s my um… information” I responded timidly, handing him my dreadful excuse of a CV. Although, I guess you didn’t need tons of qualifications to work in a corner shop.
“Seems good, wanna start now?” He said casually. My eyes practically bulged out of my head when he said this. He was giving me the job just like that? No interview? No questions at all? This was too good to be true, there simply had to be a catch.
“W-what?” I stuttered, my throat dry with bewilderment, “You’re giving me the job just like that?”
“Yeah sure, why not? You seem alright, as long as you’re not a murderer…”
“I’m not” I laughed curtly, still shaking my head in confusion. I didn’t think it was very professional for this man to give me the job without knowing much about me. I really could be a murderer for all he knew. Nevertheless, there was no way I was going to state otherwise. I needed this job more than anything.
