__________________It felt like we had been walking for days.
My muscles were starting to ache, especially around my calf where Glimmer stabbed me. Which was surprising, because it hasn't hurt since the time of the incident. It gives me chills to think of someone like her, who hasn't been in my thoughts in months.
To make matters worse, there wasn't a cloud in the sky. The suns rays shined down on us like it we were the only things left on the planet. It truly felt like it, by how dead the city was. I don't think I've seen one person since we had left the camp. Which is a very good thing.
Boggs had been walking at a slower pace, letting the Holo guide him through the concrete sidewalk through the city. It's been hours now, and I don't think we're anywhere close to the center city.
A knife was kept at my side, I guess it was just precautionary because it's not like my knife could beat the speed of a bullet flying from a gun. It still made me feel better then to have nothing.
The beeping of the Holo was starting to get on my nerves. I wanted to go off on my own badly, and I knew by the look Katniss kept giving me she did to.
"I've never seen this place so empty," Cressida said from the back of the group. We were walking on rubble now, bits and pieces of each building were gone. Bombs were heard in the distance, along with shots. I bet we wouldn't even be able to hear it if this place was still as alive as it used to be.
"Just keep your eyes open," Boggs told us.
Suddenly the beeping that I've been hearing for hours changed. My grip on my knife tightened as I took a look around Boggs' large figure. I didn't see anything but a large star shaped monument.
"What's going on?" I asked. My voice was groggy, this was the longest I haven't opened my mouth in a while.
"We've got a pod, take cover," He instructed. My heart rate picked up, immediately looking behind me. We all jogged over towards the stupid star shaped art. "Shoot through those two buildings." Katniss nodded, and took what she thought was the best place.
"Pollux," Cressida said and stood on the steps above Katniss. "Right here." The man I recognized from the hovercraft from the earlier propaganda shootings.
"This is stupid," I said, not caring that it was way too loud. Cressida ignored me, while Finnick chuckled and shook his head at me.
"You really don't care about much, do you?"
"I don't care about filming our journey to kill Snow," I told him. He sent me a smirk. "Why can't we just do it already?"
Katniss drew back her arrow, and just as she was about to release Cressida spoke. "Hold it."
"For Christ sakes," I mumbled.
"Pollux, tighter." My knife was going to get lodged into her skull next. I tightened my pony tail as I watched Katniss let go of the string that was attached to her bow. Fire let lose between the two buildings, coming out at such a rapid pace it look like water. Black smoke filled the air, it could've been seen by anyone. I could feel the heat from here.
There was a sudden explosion, I quickly ducked my head as I heard something land a couple of feet ahead of us. I let out a shaky breath as I picked my head up to see that it was a car. After a couple of seconds, the shooting fire stooped. Black smoke still remained, and we all slowly stood up.
"All clear."
This, is what the capital has placed all over the city? It sure does slow us down. I sighed before following Boggs through the ally of what was just engulfed in flames. I pressed my lips together as I stepped cautiously through the charred walkway. I ran my tongue over my dry bottom lip as I noticed a covered space up ahead. I could feel my stomach growl as we slowly approached it.
"We should stop up there," Lieutenant bitch suggested to Boggs. He gave her a quick nod, remembering that all of us weren't actual soldiers.
We soon approached the building, I practically ran into the shade. I sat down on one of the boxes and let out a sigh. My feet thanked me as I rubbed them through my black boot.
"Do you have water?" Gale asked. I looked up to see he was talking to Katniss. She nodded and handed him her silver metal bottle. "I don't think we can get across that minefield." Oh so he was coming with us now?
"Not without that holo," Katniss explained and glanced over at Boggs.
"So what do we do?" Gale asked.
"Take it in his sleep," I muttered. The two looked at me, and I shrugged. "It's just an idea."
"I think taking his teeth out would be easier," Gale joked. I smiled and took my own water bottle out. "Look at him." I looked at the two authoritative figures, who were both looking down at the black holographic machine.
"She's got quite the stick shoved up her ass," I said as I watched Lieutenant bitch nod at everything Boggs had to say. "She's quite annoying."
"I was thinking the same thing," Katniss chuckled. I guess this is why we're friends. I heard what sounded like tires crunching over rubble in the distance. My eyebrows shifted together as each of us stood.
"Is that Peacekeeper's?" Someone asked. Oh no. My heart started to race again as I tried to look through the panel that blocked us from the outside. I pulled the knife out of it's special pocket in my jacket and held onto the handle tightly.
"451 to base - we've got a truck coming in from the South. Over." Katniss walked past me, keeping her eyes on the open space ahead of us. "Stand down everyone, it's friendly."
"It's friendly?" I repeated. Finnick and I exchanged glances as we walked into the open area ahead of us. A big black truck appeared, and out came a man I didn't recognize. He walked to the back of the truck and yanked open the doors. A pair of feet hopped down from the back, and slowly walked around the vehicle.
I shook my head once I saw who it was.
Katniss took out an arrow quickly as she noticed the first one out of the truck. Peeta kept his head low as he approached our squad. Peeta was mumbling something as he got closer to us, almost like he was trying to gain some sanity. Maybe he was freaked out being back in the city. Katniss pulled the arrow back as Peeta got closer.
"Okay stop," Gale's voice was stern. Peeta nervously looked up, his eyes were on the brim of tearing up.
"Hold on," Finnick said stepping ahead of me. "Everyone relax." He was mostly talking to Katniss.
"What's going on here?" I asked. I looked back at the two men, who had walked back to the rear end of the black truck. I noticed two more sets of feet hopped down.
"Jackson, cuff him," Boggs ordered. She walked past me, surprisingly not hitting my shoulder this time as Peeta held out his wrists - as if he was used to this. I pulled my lips together, confused as to why he was here.
"Soldier, this is just for precaution - just until we get everything straightened out. Okay?" Peeta gave her a nod, as he continued to mumble something. I turned around to face Katniss and helped her lower the arrow that was aimed for Peeta's chest.
"It's okay," I reassured her. She had a crazy look in her eye. "He won't hurt you. They won't let him." She swallowed something hard as I heard Peeta walk by us. Her eyes flashed to something behind me and she raised her eyebrows.
"What's he doing here?" She mumbled. I turned around to see what she could be possibly looking at. Dolan took precedence of my entire view. He gave me a goofy grin.
"Didn't want to tell me goodbye?" He walked over and wrapped his arms around me tightly.
"You're crazy for coming here," I whispered into his chest. He chuckled and let go of me.
"Well I'm not alone."
"What?"
"You're not going to like this." I tilted my head. He moved aside, and the smile dropped from my face.
"You're gonna hug him but not me?" My jaw tightened.
"Cato."
