Past-Shadows, Pinkie promises & everyone has a jacket.
When Giya arrived at the high school's teachers' lounge, she wasn't surprised to find Avery, looking as if she owned the place. Ray walked in as if this was an occurrence he was used to. They were then greeted by the principal who told them Avery was going to be Ray's shadow for the day. She glanced over at Avery, grinning from ear to ear, already giving her and Ray the impression she was going to be a handful. Ray nodded at her and gave her a small wave of acknowledgement, which she returned.
"Giya, if you need me, I'll be in my classroom," he said as he scurried off before Avery could approach them. She stuffed her hands in her pocket as she narrowed her eyes at Giya, who in turn rolled her eyes.
Giya then proceeded to the beverage station to get some tea before classes began. Avery swooped in next to her as she made her tea. "Good morning, Dr Sunkeram."
"Morning, Eden."
Giya tried to ignore Avery as she watched her, scrutinizing her every move. Eventually, after seeing her face scrunched up for the hundredth time, she gave in with a long sigh. "You do realise, you're supposed to be my husband's shadow, not mine."
Avery pouted, following her as she exited the teachers' lounge. "That's only when class begins."
"And yet, I still doubt you'll be there. You never went to your classes, why would you go now."
"Because now, I'm a grown-up."
Giya gave Avery a once over. "I doubt it."
Avery scoffed but the mischievous grin never left her face. "Oh Giya, always so cruel - what are you doing?" she asked as Giya stopped at the corner where she could watch Aiden and Mira at their lockers. Avery peeked over her shoulder. "Are you spying on your daughter and my brother, Dr Sunkeram?"
Giya turned back to face her. "No, I'm just making sure she's alright now that you're back." She gave Avery a dark look and suddenly the air became a lot tenser as Avery's shoulders slumped slightly.
"Giya, you know I would never hurt Mira. You have to believe me." There was something about the expression Avery made that immediately evaporated the anger Giya held towards her. After all, she had raised Avery as if she was her own, even though she was just the daughter of her friend.
The first-period bell rang and all the students began to scurry off to their classrooms.
Giya sighed. "I don't know what to believe when it comes to you, Eden. I mean, do you remember how Adam and Grace were when they heard the news? Do you remember how Ray and your brother felt? There were just too many hearts broken that day for me to be able to just let it go. Stay away from Mira and Phoenix. We all know it's for the best especially since you've been in Greece."
