It seems to me that the more you live, the more scars you collect. Some little knicks and bruises from going along with the flow, others are from childhood and trying to grow up and find a place to fit in. These little scars begin to shape you, forming bits of your character and teaching you valuable lessons. Friends and family like to show their scars off, proving their brittle through life and their ability to get through it. You could even say they're a good thing at times, bringing people together for small, obscure reasons.
However, there are also large and nasty gashes. Pieces of you that will now never be the same until the scar eventually fades over time. We keep these hidden and covered up as best we can.
They are still a part of us though. Even if no one can see them clearly.
