Beep beep beep.
The constant beeping rang through my dreams. Dreams that fluidly switched from one to another. Flashes of my past, present, and future.
I saw Xavier and I on Christmas morning, the year we wore matching pajamas and both got new bicycles.
I saw my father teaching me how to drive, his hand clenching the seat rest as I swerved.
I saw Jacob and I, sharing our first kiss.
I saw Mae and I going shopping, sharing a milkshake as we sat on the curbside waiting for our ride.
I saw my graduation, my heels clicking across the stage as I finally got my diploma.
I saw my wedding day, my father's arm in mine as he led me down the aisle.
I saw my future children, my future job, my home, my car, my life.
It was all planned out for me. Including the man I would spend it with. Because I saw him the most.
I saw him when I showed him my new bike, and we rode it in freezing weather down the street. I saw him when he was the first house I drove to when I got my license. I saw him when I came out of that room with Jacob, all of us at the same party. I saw him when he picked Mae and I up, begging for his own sip of our milkshake.
I saw him in the front row when I graduated. I saw him at the end of the aisle. I saw him holding my hand as I had our first child. I saw him congratulating me on my new job. I saw him when we purchased our first house together. I saw him buying me a new car. I saw him as my life.
I saw Grayson.
And I finally realized the fantasies he had been having. They were snapshots of what our lives could be. But we didn't need those. We could make our own future.
So I woke up.

Cars tended to speed on our street since it's very straight and long and not exactly a neighborhood. Our neighbors even tried to get speed bumps installed to force people to slow down. But the township never took any action.
So when the car hit Anna it was going almost 50 miles per hour. On a road that it was supposed to be going 25.
I watched as the car hit her. As her body was thrown back into my neighbor's year. As the front of the car caved in. As she stopped moving.
I heard her scream. I heard the car horn blare. I heard the metal twist and the car screech to a stop, causing black marks on the street.
I instantly ran over to her, cradling her head in my lap and screaming at the man who was driving the car to call 911.
There was so much blood.
I still see her limp body everytime I close my eyes.
It's been three months, two days and thirteen hours.
She fell into a coma during surgery to correct her punctured lung. The doctors don't think she'll ever wake up. Brain damage they claim.
I sat next to her for weeks, talking to her, holding her hand, reading her favorite books. Sometimes just sitting there making sure she took her next breath. I only went home to shower and get a change of clothes. I barely slept.
Eventually, Anna's parents and mine sat me down, telling me that Anna would have wanted me to move on.
I know she would have.
