"My parents." (Y/n) suddenly said as she came out of the bathroom. Her eyes falling on the soldier that was knelt by the side of her pile of old, dirty clothes. A small picture in his hand.
"I'm sorry......I didn't mean......I was just trying to move them, and the picture fell out." Bucky said apologetically. Getting to his feet and handing the photo back to (Y/n).
"Its ok, James. It doesn't matter. I don't really know why I keep it. Stupid sentimentality, I suppose. Not that they deserve anything like sentiment." (Y/n) told him as she made her way to the bed. Her eyes focused on the two individuals on the small piece of glossy paper.
"When I was young, we had a dog. It was only a little thing. But it was really quite unpleasant. And for some reason it never liked me. And I must admit, that I never liked it much either. One day, I remember I was out playing in the back garden. It was beautiful morning, a warm breeze blowing through the leaves of the old oak tree that sat in one corner. The smell of the flowers drifting through the air. I can't quite remember what I was doing. But I know that I was smiling and laughing. Then for some reason, the dog began to growl at me. Then snarl, and then bark. It wouldn't back down. It just kept coming for me. Snapping at the air. I called for my mom. But she never came. I was crying. I was so scared. And that was when it happened for the first time. Before I knew it, I had changed. The dog turning instantly to stone as I looked at it. I was terrified. I didn't know what to do. What to think as my hair changed to a mass of slithering serpents. My legs, to a long, scaled snakes' tail. So, I left. There was a wood near our home. I made my way there and hide until I felt that I was back to normal. I think that it was dark by the time I got home. My parents had been scared that they couldn't find me. They were angry, worried, but relieved. That was until I told them what had happened. Why that stinking dog was now a garden ornament. I can still see the looks of horror on their faces as I told them that I had changed into this.......this thing. That I turned the dog to stone with just one look. The next day, they packed me into the car. And they took me to this horrible care home. They just dumped me there. Like I was nothing. Like I was disposable. I was only there a short time, before I ran away. The other kids bullied me because I looked different. And one of them, he bullied me so bad that I.........When I escaped, I made my way back home, only to find that my parents had moved. They just left me. No one knew where they'd gone. From that moment, I knew that I could only rely on myself. And that I was never going to let anyone hurt me again." (Y/n) said sadly, before taking one last look at the photo and then tearing it into pieces.
"(Y/n), you shouldn't........"
"Yes, I should, James. Real parents would never have done what they did. Real parents would have thought of something. Would have helped me. Would have loved me enough to not be scared of me. They don't deserve for me to keep their picture. They don't deserve me." (Y/n) interrupted. As she got to her feet and dropped the torn pieces into the small litter bin.
"So, what do you think?" (Y/n) asked, as she spun around. Showing off his clothes that she was wearing. Bucky trying to smile as he knew that she was doing her best to lighten the mood.
"I hope you don't mind, but I used your comb. This hair gets a little unruly, even when its not a mass of snakes." (Y/n) chuckled. Combing her fingers through her damp locks, as she jumped back onto the bed, right by Bucky's side. Bucky wishing that he could tell her that he would much prefer it if she were still naked. And that they were rolling around in his bed, rather than sat on it.
"They're a little big, and I think that I've pulled the drawstring on the pants as tight as I can. But I haven't been in clothes as clean as these for a long time. And they.......well they smell of you." (Y/n) told him, as she sniffed at the material of the shirt.
"You.......you look beautiful, (Y/n). But I think that you could just wear a bag, and I would still think that you looked beautiful." Bucky replied, as (Y/n) dropped her head onto his shoulder. Her fingers intertwining with the finger of his metal hand.
"I swear that you must be the sweetest man that I have ever met, James Buchanan Barnes. I don't think that anyone else has ever given me as many compliments as you have in the last few hours." (Y/n) told him. The lost girl closing her eyes as Bucky leaned his head on top of hers. The whole scene feeling strangely natural for the pair of them.
"I suppose that I should try and get my own clothed cleaned or something for when you get bored of me and throw me back out onto the streets." (Y/n) continued, as she looked at the old pile of rags.
"But.......you're not going back out there, (Y/n). I told you. You can stay with me......here. You'll be safe with me. We can explain to everyone about you, and I know that they will want to help. I will never get bored of you, (Y/n). And I will never throw you away like your parents did. This is your home now, (Y/n). Here, with me. And if Stark wants you to leave. Then I'm going with you." Bucky explained. A sense of fear and pleading in his voice, as (Y/n) moved so that she could look into his perfect blue eyes.
"You can't do all that for me, James. You belong here. You're an Avenger. The best friend of Captain America. The world needs you. You can't sacrifice all that for something like me. I.........."
"I can, and I will, if I have to, (Y/n). I know it sounds stupid, but I can't lose you. Not now. Promise me you'll stay?" Bucky told her, as he took both of her hands in his. Bucky praying that she would never even mentioning leaving again.
"I.........alright. I promise. I'll stay here as long as you want me to. But if the others don't like me. Don't want to......." (Y/n) added. Her words lost as Bucky kissed her. Her breath lost as he wrapped his arms around her and held her tight. (Y/n) finding that she could and wanted to do nothing more, than lose herself in his lips.
"They will love you, (Y/n). I know. I think that you already made an impression on Steve and the bird brain. And I'm sure that you will do the same with the others." Bucky said, as they reluctantly moved apart. His fingers combing through her long white locks, as his forehead rested against hers. The pair savouring the moment for as long as they could.
"Hey! You in their old man?" A voice called through the door. Bucky rolling his eyes as he recognised Sam's mocking tone. (Y/n) trying not to giggle as the old soldier reluctantly moved his arms from around her, and made his way to the door.
"What? Bucky grumbled as he looked at Sam. The Falcon doing his best to look around him as he tried to see into his room.
"I was just wondering if (Y/n) was busy? I thought that she might like a tour of this place with someone that doesn't think that music went down hill after Glen Miller and The Andrews Sisters." Sam told him, bouncing on his toes as he tried to look over Bucky.
"That's very nice of you, Sam. But........." (Y/n) began, as she dropped under Bucky's metal arm that was blocking Sam's entrance to the room. The lost girl coming the stand in front of the soldier.
"But James was just about to cook me something for me." She added. As she took Bucky's arm and pulled him from the doorway. Bucky happily holding onto her and leading her to the kitchen.
"Cook? Him? If you like charcoal, you'll be ok. But if you would like something that tastes of something other than carbon, I'm your guy. And did anyone ever tell you that you are absolutely beautiful, (Y/n)?" Sam cooed as he rushed up to (Y/n)'s side. Taking her other arm, as the three made their through the corridor.
"Yeah, I did. Now buzz off before I forget there's a lady present and shove your head up your............." Bucky growled. The soldier stopping his rant as the three made it the common room. (Y/n)'s eyes growing wide as a sea of faces turned to look at the trio.
