Bruce looked around his bench, trying to find something that he desperately needed to finish his latest experiment. Frustration and fatigue getting the better of him as he pushed the piles of papers out of the way. All night long he had been thinking about (Y/n). About her soft smile, and how she had snuggled into him, as he had carried her back to her room. He had to admit that he had never met a woman quite like (Y/n) before. There was something so different about her. An innocence that seemed to have disappeared in the rest of the world. She had a spirit that soared, a heart as big as the vast oceans, and a look in her eyes, that Bruce was sure could bring him to his knees.

Finally, Bruce remembered that he had left the item in his room. Rolling his eyes at his own forgetfulness, as he also recalled that he had told himself not to forget to take it with him, when he left his room the day before.

Making his excuses to Tony, Bruce made his way out of the labs to retrieve the offending item. The doctor, for once feeling his bed calling him, even though he knew that he had every intention of returning to the labs, so that he could complete his task.

The compound was deafeningly quiet, as it usually was in the very early hours of the morning. Bruce looking through the paperwork in his hands as his feet automatically led him in the direction of his room. The doctor only stopping as he heard a sudden noise. A noise that he had never heard before. It was the sound of a beautiful singing voice that drifted seductively down the long corridors. A voice that seemed to draw Bruce. The doctor's mind instantly forgetting about anything else, as all he could think about was finding the source of the melodious tune. Each note caressing him, like a lover's fingertips as he raced through the compound. The paperwork in his hands tumbling to the floor, without a second thought.

Within moments, Bruce found himself outside the doors to the pool. The doctor not knowing who could possibly be swimming at that late hour of the night. Normally, Bruce thought that it was only himself and Tony that were crazy enough to still be up and about at this ungodly hour. But obviously, tonight, that was not the case.

As quietly as he could, Bruce pushed his way through the door. His eyes slowly adjusting to the dim light of the room, as he hesitantly made his way further inside. The doctor gasping at the sight that greeted him. A sight, that despite everything that he and the other Avengers had seen, was something that he couldn't quite believe. As there on the far side of the long pool, sat (Y/n). Her legs now replaced with a beautiful blue tail, that shimmered and glistened softly against the water in which it rested. His eyes widening as he saw that the delicate opalescent scales flowed up (Y/n)'s body, wrapping themselves around her torso, and ending just at the top of her breasts.

For a moment, Bruce was finding it hard to breath. Wondering whether in fact this was all some kind of weird dream. He had been thinking about (Y/n) all night, after all. He had been heading for his room. Maybe he had got there and just decided to sleep, and this was the vision that his over tired mind was giving him. But no. He hadn't got to his room. He knew that. The voice had stopped him before he made it. So that meant.........well, that meant that all this had to be real. And even though it was true that he knew Norse gods, this was different. This was, well it was unbelievable.

"You.......you're a m-m-mermaid." Bruce suddenly stammered out. Forgetting all about hiding in the shadows as (Y/n)'s song continued to call to him. The doctor covering his ears as (Y/n) let out a high pitched scream, as her eyes fell on him. The mermaid grabbing for her towel and desperately trying to dry her tail, so that it would turn back into legs.

"It.......its not what it looks like Bruce, honestly." (Y/n) exclaimed, as she continued to dry her glistening appendage.

"But......you're a mermaid, (Y/n). You have a tail. How can it not be what it looks like?" Bruce continued, as (Y/n) continued to frantically wipe at her tail.

"I.......I can explain, Bruce. Really, I can. It's just............" (Y/n) began. The sound of running footfalls alerting (Y/n) to the fact that the rest of the team must have heard her scream, and were now making their way to locate the source.

Before she could cover herself, the team were in the room, wide eyed and mouths agog. Staring in disbelief at the wonderous creature before them. (Y/n) had seen this so many times before, she knew the effect that her true form had on mortals. Knew the effects that her song could have on the hearts of men. But she had thought it safe. And it had been so long since she had been able to be her true self, that she had found it impossible not to sing. Now, now they all knew her secret. Now, Bruce knew her secret, and there was nothing that she could do.

Quickly, (Y/n) dove into the water. It wasn't the best way to deal with the situation, but it was the best way to avoid the obvious questions that would be asked. And to not let the others see the tears that were rolling down her cheeks. The maid of the sea knowing that in one fowl swoop, in one moment of foolishness, she could have destroyed everything she had worked for. Made the others think differently of her. Made Bruce think differently of her. So, she would stay under the water until the others got bored, then raise herself from the depths, dry her tail, and make her way back to the oceans where she really belonged. To never see Bruce or the others again.

"Bruce. What the hell..........that was..........she's a.............but she can't be.......What happened to her being allergic to water?" Tony spluttered out, as he and the rest of the bleary eyed, still half asleep team, stared down at (Y/n) who was staring back up at them.

"Well, it would seem obvious that (Y/n) actually isn't allergic to water. It would appear that the reason that she, Fury and Hill informed us that she was, is that when she does come in contact with water, this is what happens." Bruce tried to explain, as he crouched by the pool's side. The doctor now knowing why (Y/n) wasn't like anyone else he had ever met. Because she really wasn't like anyone or anything that he had ever seen.

"Did you know anything about this, Bruce." Steve asked. As he joined the doctor crouching over the pool.

"Me? You think that I knew about........this? How, why would I know.........."

"Oh please, Bruce. We've all seen how (Y/n) looks at you. How she is when she's around you. How she blushes every time you look at her. Hell, even Hulk likes her. So, if (Y/n) was going to tell anyone about this, then it would be you." Clint huffed. The archer not liking how he was there, rather than still in his nice warm bed, fast asleep.

"But..........but I really didn't.........." Bruce retorted. Taken aback by the archer's comments. Realising that Tony had been right earlier, when he had described him as clueless. And that it was obvious that everyone but him, as usual, seemed to know what was going on.

"So, if you didn't know, I suppose that we better find out what's going on for the mermaid herself." Tony reasoned, as he watched (Y/n) take a seat at the bottom of the pool, and fold her arms.

"Now all we have to do, is get her out of there." The billionaire added, wondering how they were going to get any answers, if the sweet but stubborn (Y/n), didn't want to give them any.
