I walked up the steps to the only home I've known for a few years. The only home that allowed me to stay and not throw me out like the rest. They have shown me insight into what a family is truly like. Yet I still feel so alone...
I stared at the red door, and as I was about to enter Aunt Ana appeared.
"Ana" I say. "I just had the funniest encounter!"
Ana stared back, displeased before opening her mouth.
"Yes, yes I know I'm a few minutes short, I was stopped by some man who ironically told me in his own way that I could be a star if I wanted!"
"Norma sit down darling." She said sadly.
"Don't you wanna know what he said Ana ?" I said even though the tone shifted. I sat on the brown chair in the corner as she sat directly in front of me, on the floor. She didn't have much decoration. She and her husband struggled with finances and although it's saddening she made it so homey in here.
"Yes Norma, I would love to know what he said. But I need you to listen to me before I listen to you okay darling?"
"Uuhumm-uh yeah." I say.
"Norma, I um— we can't have you stay here any longer. I've arranged you to go stay with Grace, you know your mother's best-friend from work?"
"Grace?!" I stood up woozy, she pushed me back down. "Why? What's happening are you guys in trouble?"
"No darling we aren't in trouble, we just can't hand you off to anyone in the system." She looked down at her hands and played with her ring..before starting again. "we want you to have a good life. Staying in another home after being in this one so long just wouldn't benefit you."
I looked at her confused. "But your sending me to graces, I love grace she's sweet but that's sending me to another home Ana, isn't it?"
"But you know Grace, Norma. Plus your mom said for awhile now, that she wants to try to get you back, it would be good for you to get to know Grace, and have visits with your mother."I stood up looked at the mirror on the wall. Before turning to her, "I'm still not understanding why your sending me there, I like it here. This is my home Ana."
Ana said as she approached me. "Your close to aging out of the system Norma. You need to be surrounded by people who know you best, who can offer you a financially stable environment. We aren't financially capable of taking care of you right now. We've only gotten worse and it's best you go somewhere where your first priority. So I need you to get your belongings Grace will be here any minute. Please don't beg to stay Norma. It's hard enough, I'll give you a minute to process." Then she walked away sniffing.
I never got to tell her the story.
