"Today, class, you will have a pop quiz on the resources we've been studying this week" the class groaned at their teacher's announcement. A black haired 15-year old boy sat looking out the side window of the classroom, looking out at the busy streets of the city. "Mr.Takahashi, I hope you will be giving your full effort this time on this quiz.." No reply. The teacher sighed, walking down the rows to the boy's seat. They did a quick flick of the wrist with a ruler at hand and hit down hard on the desk. The boy was startled out of their trance, facing the teacher. "I will try to do better ma'am," can't keep any promises though. Rai sighed. All of his teachers got on him about doing better in school, for his family's sake.
His father had died whenever he was deployed into another country. His mother wants him to do good in school, so they don't have to worry about much. I don't see why she doesn't let me drop out, she knows I can't keep up with this. Rai faced the front of the classroom, resting his head on his hand boredom causing him to be drowsy as the teacher passed out the quiz. The class went on with nothing eventful. Rai stood up and made his way out of the classroom, then the school, walking down the street of the city.
People walked busily passed Rai, who had his hood up, hiding his face. People always give me weird looks..maybe it's because of my eyes.. oh well, I couldn't care less. It began to rain shortly after that, leading to people being more careless, bumping and running into Rai. He sighed and kept walking on. He soon came to a cross walk, an alley was close on the other side of the street. Rai looked up and caught a glimpse of a woman walking down the other side of the street. Two shady looking guys followed after her. Thugs probably from a gang... Rai crossed the street quickly before the light turn green again.
"LET ME GO," the scream came from somewhere up ahead. "Come on now, a little fun never hurt no one," a man chuckled. I shouldn't get involved, Rai kept his head down low, determined to not catch sight in what was going on. " I DON'T WANT TO BE APART OF THIS SO LET ME GO," the woman screamed. The sound of someone struggling could be heard. Rai's breath caught in his throat as he caught the glint a long kitchen knife. Rai's eyes flared with anger. Without thinking, he walked over to the three, grabbing the collar of the thug roughly pulling him away from the woman.
"What the hell do you think you're doing kid! Get out of here," the thug holding the woman yelled. "Let her go," Rai said calmly lifting his head up. The woman's coat lay on the alley's cement, with her other valuables nearby. The thug with the weapon shuffled to his feet, rushing at Rai from behind. The thug sloppily charged at Rai. He turned around just in time as the thug was closer. Rai twisted their wrist until he heard the cracking of bones. The thug yelled out in pain, dropping the knife, which Rai picked up.
He then kicked the thug in the ribs hard for good measure and then turned to the woman and the thug's lackey. " I won't ask again, let her go.." The thug let go of the woman, running down the alley. Rai helped the woman gather her things and then he began to make his way to the apartment where he and his family live.
He went into a red brick apartment building, climbing up the stairs to floor 6 room 507. He took a key out of his pocket, entering the room. "Mom, Molly, I'm home," Rai announced, laying his school bag on the chair beside the door. His mother stood in the kitchen by the stove cooking dinner. His little sister Molly came running up to him, giving Rai a big hug. "I hope you had a good day sweetie," his mom said. " Yes mom, you don't have to worry about me, you have enough on your shoulders already," replied Rai. "Big brother, will you have time to play with me today?" Molly asked, her innocent blue eyes staring up at him. Rai ruffled her brown hair playfully, smiling down at her." Of course I will."
Once dinner was finished, they ate together at the small table that could just fit in the dining room. " Oh, I almost forgot about your cake, it's in the fridge," their mother gasped, clapping her hands once before getting up and going to get the cake. It was a homemade chocolate marble cake. Rai rolled his eyes as he watched his mom place a 1 and a 6 candle beside each other and lit them. "Make a wish sweetie," his mother said. "I wish.. I wish we could stay happy like this together all the time, even if we are far away from each other," Rai announced, blowing the candles out. Soon afterwards, he and Molly played Mariokart together.
At 10pm, he decided to go into his room to go to bed. Just as he though he was about to go to sleep, he heard a knock at the front door. He groggily opened his eyes, barely hearing what his mother and the stranger were talking about. The scream from his mother was what made his heart stop beating for a full 10 seconds that's what it felt like to Rai at least. He quickly stumble out of his bed, running to the door. His blood to froze as he watched his mother get shot in the chest...
