It's amazing what one year can do to people. It's been one year since my best friend opened his eyes and took that leap and told me how he felt. In that one year we managed to get together, then fall apart, only to come back together and get married.
Evan was really starting to make a name for himself in the NHL and when the time came for his contract to be up with the Maple Leafs, everyone including me was wondering what would happen.
He talked with me about venturing out to other teams. Apparently Boston was very interested to have him play along side Drew McKenzie as his point man. His and my parents were also excited about the possibility of us coming home, but in the end he signed a 5 year deal with Toronto. He said this felt like home to him and he knew how close I was to making Junior partner at my law firm.
So here we are on the day I find out if all my hard work paid off over the last several years.
Evan had just gotten home from a 3 game road trip last night and no matter how much he wanted to show me how much he missed me, I wouldn't let him until tonight. He got in around midnight and I was sleeping and tried to wake me up, but I was not having it.
I walk into the office and Amy smiles at me, "So you all ready for today?"
"Yep, ready to finally accept my Junior Partnership here. I have worked too damn hard not to get this and don't worry I am bringing you with me. You are the best law clerk I have ever had. So if they want me, I come as a package deal."
"Thanks so much. You are the best boss I have ever worked for and an even better friend," giving me a hug.
"So how is it going with Gordy?" I ask her.
A couple of months ago when she went with me to one of Evan's games, I introduced her to Marcus Gordon, or Gordy as everyone calls him. He is the Leaf's goalie and a sweetheart.
"Good, we are going out tonight and I think he may just get some tonight," she says with a wink.
I shake my head and walk into my office and start to get to work.
An hour later Amy buzzes me and says that the Senior partners want to see me in the Conference room. Walking out of my office and smoothing down my skirt and putting on my jacket, "How do I look?"
"Like you are getting the Junior Partnership," Amy says giving me the thumbs up.
Walking down to the conference room I feel my hands starting to sweat and I wipe them on my skirt.
I push open the door and 4 heads look up at me. I nod and smile at them as I sit down at the table.
"Good afternoon Mrs. Donaldson," James Masterson says. He is one of the Senior partners and had been with the firm for 15 years.
"Good afternoon Mr. Masterson," I say with a smile.
"Well as you know there is a Junior partner spot that has recently opened up with Eric Harris leaving the firm and your name has been brought forward for us to consider."
I nod again.
"With that being said, we have all looked over you case work over the past 4 years and I have to say Mrs. Donaldson, it is very impressive. You are quite the bright young lawyer. You have an impressive win/loss ratio and have pulled in some rather large clients this past year."
"Well I am very committed to the firm and I enjoy what I do so that helps," I say laughing a little.
"It shows Mrs. Donaldson and I heard your husband just extended his contract with his hockey team. I would just like to go on record as saying thank goodness for that because Mrs. Donaldson we don't want to lose you at this firm. So I think I can safely say that the 4 of us would like to offer you the Junior Partner spot if you are so inclined to take it."
