Chapter 1

It was early in the morning when Marie's water broke, we rushed her to the hospital and since we came here, we haven't heard anything. My nerves were increasing with every minute that passed, my hands were dripping with sweat, and the weather wasn't helping either.

I kept strolling back and forth, hoping that my anxieties would subside. For the first time, I understood what men go through when waiting for their kids to be born; of course, women go through a lot with the pain and all, but I couldn't stand the anticipation of what is to come.

“Are you okay?" My husband Matt asked me.

“Yes,” I simply informed him to avoid explaining myself and what was going on in my mind.

Five minutes later, we heard footsteps coming from the hallway, Matt stood from the bench when the doctor approached us.

“Mr. and Mrs. Jones” the doctor calls, she had brown hair cut in a sleek Bob with heavy bangs, and she had gray eyes. On the right side of her chest, there was a name tag written “Dr. Amber Hathaway”. She informed us that Marie just gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. I jumped into Matt's arms with excitement. We have been waiting for this moment for more than five years, and now it is finally here. I am a mother, who would have thought?

I was excited and nervous at the same time when we were told that we could finally see Marie and the baby. We entered the room, and we saw Marie holding a baby in her hands.

Tears started flowing down my eyes, I couldn't believe it, I couldn't believe I was a mother. All thanks to Marie, who agreed to be our surrogate. I don't think the money we are paying her will amount to the good she has done for me and my husband.

“It's a girl,” she told us. The nurse who was standing next to her bed checking on the oxygen levels smiled at Marie's reaction.

I started walking towards her and the baby.” Yeah, the doctor is just informing us,” Matt responded.

Marie gave the baby to me, it felt strange holding a little person in my arms. Matt stood behind me watching the baby over my shoulder, I turned and handed over the baby to him, “She's cute… I can't wait to tell everyone that I am a father now,” he stated.  There was joy in his voice, and for a moment, I couldn't help but notice that I was the reason he couldn't be a father. I decided to put the thought behind my back and decided to leave for the moment.

“Are you happy, really?” I teased him.

“Yes, why do you ask?” He asked with confusion written all over his face.

“Nothing,” it's just that the last time I checked, you wanted a baby boy to take over your whole business.

“Yeah, I remember, but seeing the baby has made me realize that I was wrong, even a girl can handle the business just as well as a boy. It's simply a matter of teaching her.” I didn't expect him to say that.

“That's nice to know, “I lean over and then kiss him on his lips, before turning my attention back to the baby, “So what are you going to name her?”

“Who?” He questioned.

“Ah, the baby,” I explained.

“Oh, the baby, right. Hamm, what about–"

He was interrupted by the nurse, ushering us to get out of the room, before running off to go and call the doctor. A few minutes later, they both come back trotting towards the room. “W-what's going on?” I stutter. I was confused because I didn't know what was going on. Another nurse came, and she took the baby from Matt.

“She’s having a seizure,” the doctor told us.

“Is she going to be okay?” I asked her.

“I don't know, ma’am, please let me do my job. I will get back to you two,” she seemed nervous. It was the first time I saw a doctor act like she did because I believe they are trained to be calm when there is an emergency.

I started panicking, and my chest felt constricted “Matt, I can't breathe,” I told him.

“Carla honey come down, she's going to be fine, let's just be positive and leave everything in God's hands,” he says, trying to convince himself more than he did me. Before I knew it, everything went black.

 ***

I wake up in a room painted white all over the wall, bright light leaking through the window, and my husband sitting in the chair next to the bed. Then it hit me, I am in the hospital, but what am I doing on this bed, in this room? The recollection of what happened came to mind, Marie, the seizure. I didn't even realize that I was crying, not until Matt leaned over and whipped out my tears. “H-how I-is Ma–”

“Shhh,” my husband Matt cut me off before I could even finish.

“l know you want to know how Marie's doing, the doctor came while you were asleep, and she informed me that they are doing everything possible to help her,” he told me in a sad tone.

While he was talking, the door opened revealing a nurse who I assume came to check up on me, she had long dark hair, and green eyes like mine. She came towards me with a smile on her face, “how are you feeling ma’am,” she asked me, her smile not leaving her face.

“Am fine,” I say while returning the smile, though it was forced.

“You're free to go, Mrs. Jones,” she says. I got up from the bed and started heading over to the door, I sighed before opening the door to the room I was in, and we walked out into the hallway. As we were about to go to the waiting room, the doctor called us. She told us that they did everything they could, but Marie didn't make it.

“What do you mean we did everything?” I was fuming with anger when I asked, even though I knew the answer.

“She's dead Mrs. Jones, "I felt numb, I couldn't move, and I didn't even realize that Matt was holding me. He pulled me close to his chest before taking me out of the hospital to our limousine, our driver Carlos opened the door as we got in, and he closed the door for us before going to the driver's seat. He got in and buckled himself before driving us out of the hospital's parking lot. I cried waterfalls of tears on Matt's chest until I fell asleep.

 ***

We reached home, and Carlos packed the limo, he got out of the car and then came to open the door for us. My husband got out, and he carried me into the house and all the way upstairs to our room, he put me on the bed and removed the high heels from my feet. He pulled the covers close enough to my face before joining me.
