Lauren's POV
John spun around and stuck his face obtrusively close to mine. We stood so close that our toes touched. His eyes were wide and fearful.
"Think, think now! I'm trying to protect him. It doesn't matter why it just matters that I am." He argued through clenched teeth his finger jabbing at my forehead aggressively. I put my hands on my hips.
"I'm no trusting fool. Tell me."
"You don't know what harm...you think that with your little-"
"Now!"
"He's my son." The words tumbled out. John's eyes widened in horror and he clapped his hand over his mouth. I stared at him in amazement.
"W-what?" John backed away until he was flat against the door. His chest heaved inflating him in sheer size. "How?"
"His mother and I..." John's voice was small and trailed away. I didn't really need to hear the gory details, I understand the biology fine. It was like a weight had been relieved from my heavy head and I sighed in relief and broke involuntarily into a wide grin.
"So that's how he was able to fight a bear..." I giggled like a crazy person. John really was just trying to help. I really did have an ally in him in this crazy werewolf world. "Does this mean that he's a werewolf?" I looked up to see that John was giving me a weird look. Slowly he shook his head.
"No, he's werewolf side is dormant...I think...I don't really know."
"Well it's kind of important. It might be a good idea to find out." I thought about how Tom would take being a werewolf. He would have a parent again maybe even a caring one this time. He would have to drop this whole werewolf hunter thing.
"He can't ever know." John interrupted my trail of thought.
"Why not?" Seriously, all these secrets it was silly! There was no need-
"You don't understand, you're new to this life plus you're mated to the Alpha so you get the privileged view point. But down at the bottom of the pack things are different. With a pack once you're in there's no leaving." I barely dared to breath, captivated by his words. This was what I wanted to hear about. This was why I used up all my annual leave and travelled across the world to a small under populated town. There were other worlds hidden in the crevices of ours and the journalist in me was dying to bring them to the surface. John stopped talking.
"Yes," I urged him to carry on but his eyes were focusing on the space above my head. His watery blue eyes focused back on me.
"The alpha is looking for you." I was torn. I wanted to see Lewis and not have him worrying about me again but I had finally been getting somewhere here. "We'll talk later and I'll explain everything. In the meantime promise me that you won't tell anyone, including Tom."
"I promise."
Lewis' POV
Let's play pretend and ignore that dark times lay ahead. I closed my eyes listening instead to running stream as it skipped over the rocks, the song and chimes of the birds and the reassuring steady rhythm of Lauren's heartbeat. Her soft warm fingers had begun playing with my hair automatically when I rested my head on her lap in the comfortable position we had rested in for nearly an hour. If she chose to stay with me all our days could be like this. I pictured us in this exact spot, white haired and wrinkly perhaps being pestered by lisping grandchildren. We would have a large happy family. My sons would grow up knowing the loving care of a mother, the care I had missed. This image slowly melted away replaced by a torturous one, a future where Lauren left me. She could return to her own family, one day she would find a nice human guy and he would ask her to grow old with him. Lauren would look beautiful on her wedding day, a radiant goddess blessing her sunshine smile on everyone but me.
