Colin, the beta...

"Alpha?" I approached him tentatively. He didn't respond, his body crumpled down the middle and he sank to the floor. I walked around to look at his face, his gaze was completely vacant. "Lewis?" I crouched to be eye level.

"I can't feel her." Lewis' voice sounded...dead.  I shook his shoulder but he didn't even blink. My friend was gone. A mate's grief will last forever. They will never laugh or even smile again. A mate's grief where they feel in some way responsible for their loved ones death can result in them never really living again.

"Beta?" Annie called, standing respectfully at a distance. There was nothing now that could be done for Lewis. I'd lost my best friend.

"Call all warriors and return to positions. The Luna is dead."

"The Alpha...?" Her voice trailed.

"The Alpha's incapacitated. I'm taking charge in his stead."

Annie gasped and her eyes widened. Automatically she bowed down low.

"Yes, Alpha Colin." She turned wolf and scampered off. I sighed heavily. Tonight had become a hellish nightmare. I squeezed Lewis' shoulder, not that he could feel the weak gesture, before morphing and returning to the pack house.

I needed to secure the border before calling the warriors and having them pledge their loyalty to their new Alpha. Then I would have to contact the other Alpha's and allow them a chance to challenge me. But first I needed to tell Immy... she was going to kill me.

George

I dragged her limp body from the wreck. If it wasn't for the blood it would've looked like Lauren was sleeping. I tried to remember back to first aid training but it was all a little foggy. I put my hands over about the position of her heart and pushed down hard. I couldn't remember how many times you were meant to do this so I just kept going. Her whole body jerked as I thumped at her chest causing her head to knock against the dirt. Then I tilted her head back and opened her mouth wide and breathed into it. As I breathed - I watched as I made her chest rise and fall. I returned to thumping her chest.

"Please Lauren, work with me here." I pleaded. I moved quicker now, giving an equal time to my beating and breaths. Her expression remained serene and still.

Stop kid, she's gone. My wolf advised.

'No!' Tears spilt down my face and I shivered, exposed to the night air. I was getting out of breath and my arms ached. 'I won't stop.' She'd just come here for her gap year and now...

WOAH!

"Lauren?!" I froze holding my breath for the most suspenseful minute of my life. Her chest heaved up and down. "Lauren!" I didn't dare to touch her but watched as her forehead wrinkled and her lips puckered in discomfort. She groaned. An inarticulate sound of shock and relief escaped me. "Thank God."

I put a hand on the side of her face - avoiding the worse damaged area. "Lauren, can you hear me?" Slowly her eyes flickered open and blearily she looked me over. "You're going to be fine Lauren. You're safe now." I reassured her. She moaned in pain but didn't shut her eyes.

For the first time in my life, I felt brave enough to open a mind link with the Alpha.

Alpha, I've found Lauren! She's alive!
