“River!” Ty snaps me from my thoughts. I look at her. “Are you even listening to me?”“Sorry. What's the time?” I answer, my mind still distant. “11:37, why?” she answers and folds her arms.
“Nothing.” I answer. She stares at me like I had committed a crime. “What's wrong Riv?” she lowers her voice to a concerned tone.
“Nothing. I'm fine, everything is fine.” I tighten my jaw. “River. I know you're lying. What's wrong?” she holds my arm. It's always reassuring when she holds me.
It's silent for a while, but then I decide to tell her. “My mom's coming out.” I say nervously.
“Coming out? Is she gay?” Ty asks in the most calm tone that it makes me laugh. “No, Ty, i don't know. I mean she's being released from jail.” I fiddle with my fingers.
“What!?” Ty shouts so loud that most students in the cafeteria look at us. “Sorry.” she then smiles at everyone and waves around. I laugh at her because she's so dumb.
“What do you mean she's being released? Like for real?” she lowers her voice and asks with wide eyes.
“She called me and told me to go fetch her in a prison somewhere outside the city. Like a one hour drive. Actually I should probably get going now.” I take one more bite from my giant pretzel then stand up.
“Wait...what about school?” she looks up at me.
“I don't know I will just have to catch up with work tomorrow, and accept the detentions.” I shrug and grab my bag from the floor. Honestly school is the least of my worries right now.
“Okay, how are you gonna get there since your brother took your family car?” Oh shoot.
“Bus?“ I shrug again. “I should go now.”
“No, you'll take my car, I'll come with you.” she leaned down and grabbed her bag and we walked out of the school building.
Getting past the security was definitely not easy, but since I've done this before I got it handled. Straight men are so easy to read.
We are driving to the prison where my mom will be waiting for us, well me. I'm the one driving because Ty wanted to "sleep", and by sleep she meant finish all the snacks we had.
I don't know what I would be without Tyler. She's my sanity at this point.
“Ty, we're here, wake up.” I shake her arm and she immediately wakes up. One thing we have in common is we are both light sleepers.
“Mmmm” she groaned and opened her eyes. A few minutes later, she was fully awake and now fresh.
“So we're just gonna wait here?” Ty asked, still eating snacks. I would usually be eating with her but I'm too nervous to even stop tapping my fingers on the starring wheel.
“Yep. That's exactly what we're doing.” I answer. it's not like they need me to sign anything anyway, Joanna is an adult.
Ty and I play Dragon fighter on our phones and compete for the highest score. I obviously won, like I do all the time. I'm just better in gaming and Tyler is better in sports.
“Is that your mom?” Ty said out of nowhere and I quickly turned my head to look. It's her.
She must have noticed Ty's car because she walks right up to us.
“What do I do?” I panicked and ask Ty.
“Go out there and talk to her before getting in the car.” she smiled at me and held my hand. I take a huge deep breath and get out of the car. I see my mother smiling in the distance.
