Within a few days, one of your closest friends at work have forced himself upon you, gotten fired and then been replaced by your ex who was stood in front of you shaking your hand.

Alright... how the hell did we get here??  you wonder, trying to keep yourself calm and not completely breakdown at how quickly everything seemed to be changing right now.

"Oh! You two know each other?" Marie asks, her face lightening at this like it would make this easier. Oh how wrong she was.

"Vaguely, we went to school together" you admit, trying to play it down as Chris seemed determined to play it up.

"Oh c'mon y/n, we dated for a while too"

"Not long though"

Marie thankfully picked up on the frankly strange atmosphere that you two had created so left you to chat, finding something she needed to do.

Chris grins at you at pulls you in for a hug before you can register what's going on, wrapping his arms around you and slapping your back like you were old buddies.

"Well this was unexpected wasn't it!" he remarks as he pulls away, sorting the sleeves of his jacket which had risen slightly from hugging you.

You stutter out a vaguely comprehendible answer, still desperately trying to process everything.

"I'm actually here because of you"

"What do you mean? How did you know I was working here?"

"No no no, not here here, I mean I'm in hair and make-up because you spoke about it so passionately when we were younger, I didn't really have any interests so because that was the only thing I'd ever heard someone speak about with such love, I thought I'd give it a go"

You blink a few times, amazed that someone would choose a whole career path because you had an interest in it. What if you'd spoken passionately about lion taming??

"Turns out I'm not too bad" he jokes

"I mean I'm kinda confused I'll be honest but that's amazing!"

You both catch up with each other, filling each other in on what's happened in your lives since you last saw each other. You forgot that, as much as Chris wasn't your best kiss, and was far from your best shag, he was actually quite fun. Maybe you two would've worked out as just friends because the conversation was flowing perfectly like you'd been friends for ever. You're cut short in the middle of a laughing fit by Marie calling you both out to get started for the day, both walking out with bright red cheeks, Chris wiping tears from his face. As it turns out, it wasn't as awkward as originally imagined.

"Right, Chris, you'll be with Micah, stick with him and he'll help you settle in" Marie instructs him. Micah, one of the other team members stood next to her with a warm smile. You'd never really gotten to know Micah properly but he always seemed very friendly.

"If you need any help with anything though, feel free to give me a shout too" you add on, scribbling your number on the back of his hand with a spare pen you had in your hoodie pocket. You leave him with a smile and head to get started on Cate's make-up.

"So who was that guy?" Cate asks, snapping you out of a trance you had slipped into.

"Huh? Who?"

"That was my question" she laughs "are you alright?"

"Oh yeah I was just away in a dream, uh that was the new guy they got to replace Ewan, his name's Chris" you inform her, crouching down a little to inspect your work so far
