Closure

Tony pulled up into the parking lot but made no effort to get out. Resting his head against the steering wheel, he closed his eyes to silence the thoughts overloading his brain. Instead, they became louder and more painful.  

26 years ago. 26.

He didn't blame Bucky or Steve, it wasn't their fault. 

Hell, Everyone thought Steve was dead when they........IT happened.

After 30 minutes or so, Tony opened his door and stepped out of the car. He slowly walked around the bending path that led towards his parents grave when he saw a man standing where they were buried. The man was wearing a grey shirt and jeans while also sporting a black cap and aviator sunglasses. Tony noticed that the torso of the man was......Dorito shaped?

STEVE

Leaning against an old oak tree, he watched as steve lay flowers down on one knee keeping his head bowed. Tony knew he couldn't prolong it any longer he walked up to the kneeling soldier and was about to clear his throat when steve whipped round. 

"Tony? Shoot I'm sorry. I'll leave now." he said standing up getting ready to leave. instead of the fury that once controlled and overpowered Tony whenever Steve mentioned his parents, he felt a sense of peace and clarity. 

"No, Steve it's fine. I would like it if you could stay." The two sat on a nearby bench and just remained silent. It wasn't an awkward silence, after all they had been through they all could just remain silent for days and still know if everything okay or not.

After a while, Tony began to speak.

"You know my mother used to have a philosophy about death. she would always say that funerals aren't for the dead, they are for the living. They provide closure, clarity and say goodbye."

Steve looked at Tony "She's not wrong but-"

"It doesn't make it any harder." He finished. 

The two sat their well into the night and soon fell asleep, they didn't even wake up when a metal armed ex-assassin came and sat next to Tony, also there to pay his respects.
