november 20th, wednesday

It was currently 1:05, time for my spanish class.

which, i kinda hated.

i set my bag down next to my desk with a sigh, then sat down heavily, earning a glare from the teacher.

she started the lesson. which i was currently paying zero attention to.

until there was a knock on the door.

mrs. jackson told whoever it was to come in, and a blue-haired, chain-laden girl stepped through the doorway.

her eyes scanned the classroom briefly as mrs. jackson told her off for never showing up and being late when she did.

i looked down quickly, feeling as though ants were crawling up my neck.

eventually, mrs. jackson sighed and directed her to an empty seat.

of fucking course, it was right behind me.

i stared at my paper while she walked past me.

"miss o'connell, feet off your desk!" mrs. jackson damn near yelled.

billie just laughed. "hop off my dick," she retorted. i couldn't see her, but i could imagine her smirk as mrs. jacksons' jaw dropped. she shut up, continuing with the lesson.

i almost laughed as well, but i held it in. i was unable to fight back a wide smile , however, so i hid it with my curtain of hair.

somehow, i could clearly imagine billie sitting behind me with her feet up on the desk, maybe messing with a piece of her hair or a pencil. the thought made me smile again involuntarily.

"miss alaska rae, would you care to translate this for me?" mrs. jacksons' snarky tone cut through the picture in my mind, dissolving it.

i looked up, hearing a faint "wait, what?" from behind me, although i didn't think too much of it as i correctly translated what she had wrote on the board until i felt a light tap on my ankle.

i glanced backwards, seeing billie staring at me with wide eyes. i quickly looked down at my lap again, fiddling with my hands nervously. i knew we hadn't made eye contact because my wrist wasn't burning, thank god.

there was another tap on my ankle. "hey, kid. are you alaska?" she whispered. i could tell she was leaning closer because there was no way she could be that close to my ear otherwise.

i ignored her. for the first time ever, mrs. jackson came to the rescue, telling billie off again for talking in class. i heard her huff with annoyance and the chair squeak as she sat back down.

relief coursed through me.

after too many more minutes of listening to mrs. jackson talk in spanish and answering stupidly easy questions, the bell rang.

instantly, i shot up from my seat, snatching my bag and hurrying as fast as i could without running to my next class, language arts/creative writing.

to be honest, i really liked the writing projects in it, and i always made an effort to turn in my best, so the teacher, mr. burner, really liked me.

"good afternoon, alaska," he smiled at me. yeah, he used my first name all the time but constantly reminded me to call him by his formal name.

i returned the greeting, then walked to my regular seat.

as i was expecting, billie came in not long after me. i could feel her eyes burning holes in the side of my head as she was, once again, reprimanded for not showing up.

she was forced to take a seat on the opposite side of the room from me, because by now several other students, including my friend megan, had entered the room and sat by me.

once everyone was settled, mr. burner smiled and began the lesson.

"-now, because this is a rather large project, we will be doing things a bit differently and i will be assigning everyone partners,"

my heart dropped. i wouldn't have minded partners if i was allowed to pick, because then i could've teamed up with megan. but having to work with a complete stranger? i knew i was going to hell.

i put my hand up. "sir, i really think i could do this on my own. i've done similar projects on my own before, i know i can do it," i basically pleaded. i could feel everyones eyes on me, and i wanted nothing more than to duck under my seat and curl in a ball.

mr. burner smiled. "i believe you could, too, miss rae. but that would leave someone else without a partner and besides, it will be good for you to work with someone else,"

i swallowed thickly and nodded, staring down at my hands again as he began to list off partners.

"- megan williams with sarah parker, and... yes, i think billie and alaska will have fun together," he smiled and clapped his hands together, then reminded us of how much time we had and sent us off.

i barely heard him. i felt numb as i rose from my seat and headed for the door, but i was stopped by a tap on my shoulder.

giving myself a moment to prepare and accept the inevitable, i turned around and gave the blue-haired girl a small smile. "yeah?"

she smiled back. "you're alaska, right?" she questioned, her eyes darting around while trying to catch mine as they examined her face.

i stubbornly refused to meet her gaze, instead staring at her odd left eyebrow. "yep, that's me," i let out an awkward chuckle.

"right, cool. do ya wanna come over to my place sometime today or tomorrow? so we can talk about the project? or we could go to yours, or a cafe or something. i don't mind, whatever works for you," she bit her lip, eyeing me expectantly.

i, in turn, bit the side of my cheek. "um, i'm actually hanging out with my friends today, and tomorrow i have soccer practice after school. but maybe saturday," i said.

and then, making the worst mistake of my life (or so i thought at the time), i met her eyes and felt a sharp burning sensation on my, thankfully covered, left wrist.

i saw her eyes light up once this happened. "yeah, saturday works for me. text me when you wanna meet up and where, i'll give you my number," with this being said, she pulled out a notebook and pen and wrote her number on a page, swiftly ripping it out and handing it to me.

i thanked her, and then we were interrupted by megan.

"hey allie, we still chillin' at your place? cause i'm ready to go if you are," she seemed completely oblivious to the fact that i was talking to billie.

"sure, let's go," i swung my bag over my shoulder and was about to walk away when billie stopped me again.

"you two need a ride? i'm not doing anything tonight, so i've got all the time in the world. plus, i like driving," she shrugged, smiling sheepishly and hopefully at me.

i opened my mouth to refuse, but megan had other plans.

"that'd be dope, thanks girl,"

ugh. fuck you, honestly megan.
