i ran out the door. "what are you doing here?" i exclaimed, although truthfully i was ecstatic and holding myself back from launching into her arms.
she smiled. "coming to spend time with my soulmate. hop in," she jerked her head toward the passenger side of the car.
i hesitated. i was still in my hoodie and sweats. "should i change...?" i asked tentatively.
she shook her head. "nah, we aren't going anywhere fancy. besides, you look great," she gestured overenthusiastically at my outfit.
i blushed a little, running back to shut the door to hide it, then back to her car.
as soon as i shut the door, i noticed a warm and pleasing food aroma that filled her car.
i figured it out a moment later when billie reached back and pulled out an a&w bag from the backseat.
"i got us some fries, since you said you love them so much. and lemonade, too," she waved vaguely at the two cups in the holders that i hadn't noticed until now.
feeling warm and fuzzy inside, i thanked her, realizing too late i let a little too much emotion into my tone.
billie shrugged, but i thought i saw a small pleased grin on her face as she put her hand on the back of my seat to back out. "it was nothing, really. help yourself,"
but i felt like she didn't understand how much i appreciated it. "no, really. it's so sweet that you remembered,"
this time, there was a hint of pink on her cheeks that she was desperately trying to hide by tilting her head away from me.
"yeah, well... no problem, i guess," she mumbled.
i smiled to myself in satisfaction as i pulled out a container of fries and set them on the console. finally, i'd gotten her at a loss for words.
"where are we going?" i asked curiously.
she chuckled. "you'll see, babygirl,"
i groaned in frustration to hide my blush, but she just laughed harder.
"cute ass," she muttered, afterwards of which i smacked her.
she lifted an arm to shield her face playfully. "aw, c'mon. just accept it already," she teased, chuckling.
i huffed in annoyance. "i never said it wasn't true, just that you don't have to point it out all the time," i muttered.
"hm, you love it," she said.
i looked away and rolled my eyes, remembering last second she told me not to.
i heard a dark laugh come from her. "oh angel, don't dig yourself into a hole. you'll regret it later,"
i swallowed, searching for a subject change. but then the car stopped. I saw billie push her seat back all the way then rest her feet on the steering wheel, a lazy grin on her face.
she turned to me, then jerked her head out the front window. confused, i followed her gaze and gasped in amazement.
right ahead of us was a lake, not exactly a big one, but the color of blue-green made it absolutely gorgeous. past the lake, there was a pine forest that weredogs like me enjoyed to run through. even further in the distance, i could see a mountain range, the tops tinted pink from the setting sun.
we were parked on a grass bank, several feet from the edge of the water that i now noticed reflected the trees on the other side like a mirror.
"wow," was all i could say. i was speechless.
billie laughed. "that was my first reaction, too. i come here to think sometimes," with this said, she reached over to grab one of my fries. i turned to her, about to protest and probably smack her again, but to my surprise she leant over and pressed it between my lips until i took it into my teeth.
she held eye contact the whole time, a slight smile on her lips. i caught her gaze flicker down to mine more than once, but i forced my eyes to stay focused on hers.
after a few moments, her stare got more intense, her smile dropping as she licked her lips.
blushing, i looked down, only for a finger to lift my chin back up.
"nu-uh, look at me, babygirl," her tongue swept past her teeth as she smiled at me.
she suddenly seemed to get nervous. her hand dropped from my face, but she maintained eye contact. something about her expression let me hold it.
"allie," she began. "i know this is fast- faster than lots of soulmates, even- but i feel like...no, i know that you're my person. i want to make you happy, to see you smile everyday, hold you at night and tell you jokes at three in the morning when we can't sleep just to hope that your own laugh will exhaust you. i want you to be mine, and i want to be yours,"
she took a deep breath here. i was so overwhelmed by my emotions, i could hardly think straight (i mean, not that i ever did anyway,).
she looked down, then back up through her lashes, her intensity making me want to melt right there.
"alaska rae, will you be my girlfriend?"
