i should've known.
the context of the text shocked me somewhat, however. i had to read it three times over before i fully understood.
billie
heyy.
sorry for short notice, but mind if i take you out for that date i promised tonight?i chewed the inside of my left cheek thoughtfully. i was still a little upset about our earlier exchange, but i really had nothing else to do today, except maybe catch up on sleep. i didn't really like to sleep during the day though, so this gave me a reason not to.
i sighed as i realized something else, then quickly texted her back.
alaska
i'm down but i gotta text my mom, she's not home right now.
alaska
oh and you'll have to give me a ride :D
i laughed to myself at my last message. the smiley face was meant to be mocking, but if she took it the other way it didn't really matter.
i waited until it said read under the texts, then opened my moms' chat thread.
alaska
is it okay if i go out with someone tonight? i couldn't find anyone at home btw.
i waited for a few moments, just staring at my screen, until a banner showed me that billie responded and i tapped that.
billie
noooo text ur dad instead, he's better.
billie
and ofc i can give u a ride, that was the plan anyway pretty
alaska
too late, but it doesn't really matter anyway cuz he would show her before replying
alaska
i'm still waiting on a response. it's only been a couple minutes, though
but just then, i got another notification, this time from my mom. her answer honestly surprised me.
mom
sure, but only if it's billie. i don't want you horsing around with anyone i haven't met. and your brothers are all at some kids house.
i answered with a simple 'thanks', then told billie i could go, and asked what i should wear, to which she said something like i did on sunday. so that's what i did.
i put my hair up half-up half-down again because i liked it, then waited for billie to text me to come outside.
once she did, i quickly put on some nicer shoes and headed out, seeing a matte black dodge challenger idling by the curb.
i saw billie standing next to it. she was smiling faintly at me, but that was all i could see of her face because she was wearing sunglasses.
"hey there, pretty girl," she complimented, her smile growing wider when i blushed. she opened the passenger door for me, then walked around and hopped in the other side.
"where are we going?" i asked once i'd put my seatbelt on and we were on the road.
she smiled again, glancing briefly at me before directing her attention back to the pavement ahead of us. "somewhere. i hope you haven't eaten yet, guess i shoulda asked you before i made plans," she chuckled lightly.
" i haven't eaten," i confirmed, then observed her as discreetly as i could.
i liked the way she drove, with both her wrists over the top of the wheel and slouching slightly. she seemed relaxed and confident, and i loved it. not so much that i was going to risk getting caught staring, however.
we drove in silence for about fifteen minutes. it was a comfortable silence, not the awkward kind that appears when you're both searching for something to say.
she rushed to open my door for me once she'd parked. i shot her an amused look at her slightly breathless state, but she ignored it.
she seemed unable to keep her eyes off me, i could feel my cheeks getting redder and redder for every moment we spent walking through the parking lot to the front entrance of a restaurant i'd never heard of.
she opened the door of that too, and i was quickly greeted by a waitress waiting to take customers to their tables.
she smiled warmly at me and billie as she came in after me, grasping my hand gently. i almost jumped, the small gesture surprised me.
"hello, good evening. a table for two, or are there more coming?" the waitress questioned.
"just two, thank you," billie replied. i thought her tone was a bit crisper then usual.
the waitress nodded and led us to a small booth with closeable curtains that billie drew shut quickly after she left.
when she turned back to me, i knew she was planning on telling me something serious. she was still smiling, but it seemed a bit strained.
well, here we go i guess.
