Excitement and nervousness was palpable in the Mystery Machine, which was clunking along as John B drove them over the bridge, headed toward Figure Eight.

"We go in there, guns a-blazin', make Ward Cameron beg for mercy, abscond with as much gold as possible and vámonos, get the hell out of there," JJ gave a play by play as Devyn loaded the clip of his gun with fresh bullets, the pair sitting criss-cross on the floor of the van. Kiara was in the passenger seat, Pope sitting on the side seat and watching observantly, still in his dress attire.

"Send that shit right down the Intracoastal," John B affirmed, looking to Kiara with a toothy grin.

"Wait for the weather," Kiara continued his sentence with ease.

"Exit to Cuba," Pope finished for the girl.

"Cuba?" Devyn and JJ asked in unison, the girl putting the full clip back into the gun.

"No man, Xcalak, Jewel of the Yucatán," JJ started spinning his version. "Lobsters so thick, mangoes, and no word for money."

Devyn grinned at the blonde, having heard him talk about the place dozens of times. JJ excitedly loaded the gun, pumping a bullet into the chamber, frowning when Devyn took the weapon from his hand, turning the safety on.

"Let's do this shit," John B smiled back at his friends briefly, his dimples showing.

This was the first time in a while that they had hope. Hope that things would work out for them. But hope was a dangerous thing— a lesson they had learned over and over again.

Devyn tucked the gun into the waistband of her jean shorts as John B parked the van in front of the private air strip, the friends not hesitating to jump out and run to the fence to get a better look.

"Give it back," JJ pouted, flinching as Devyn smacked his hand away when he reached for the weapon once again.

"Stop talking," Devyn fired back with a snarky smirk, perking up when Kiara started talking.

"What's the plan?" Kiara asked as she jogged to the fence. "Broad strokes."

"I don't think we got that far," Devyn shook her head, groaning in annoyance as JJ relentlessly tugged on her arm.

"They're loading up the gold," Pope announced, looking through the binoculars that he brought.

Always the brains of the operation.
