They can hide as their original versions shadow. Ex: Nightmare Freddy blends in as Freddy's shadow sometimes. But, seeing as the nightmares are typically taller than their original versions and their shape may be different, it'll be noticable when the shadow is actually the originals shadow or if it's actually a nightmare animatronic.
