Chapter 17

As me and my dad sat down at the table for three a waitress came up and asked what we wanted to drink. We placed out orders and just as the waitress left Hannnah approached or table.
"Well, if it isn't my favorite step daughter," she said smiling.
I nearly choked on my food.
"I-I'm sorry what did you just..." I say trying to sound as polite as possible.
"Well, um, annabeth that's why I wanted for you to come with us tonight," my dad says hesitantly.
"Why didn't you tell me this!?" I say starting to get aggravated.
"Annabeth I'm sorry I couldn't find the right time to tell you," he says with a look of sympathy on his face.
"What about when we were just walking down the street and talking about things that were important to us?" I ask pushing my chair back from the table.
"Annabeth I-" he starts to say,
"No, you know what no, I don't want a new mom, I want my mom back," I say standing up from the table and walking away.

I walk out of the restaurant and sit on the stairs of the restaurant and put my head in my hands and start to cry. I didn't want a new mom, I wanted my real mom. Why did she have to get in that stupid car accident when I was only 10.

I heard a door open up behind me and turn my head. It was Hannah.
"I don't want to talk," I say turning my head back around.
"Annabeth please, just hear me out," she says sitting beside me.
"What?" I ask rolling my eyes.
"Well, when I was about your age, my mom left me and my dad. She didn't tell us why or when she was leaving but one day she just, wasn't there," she says looking forward.
I turn my head to look at her.
"And then, my dad remarried this lady who was a total jerk to me, she absolutely hated living with me, so I left. I left the only place I had ever called home," she says looking down.
I don't quite know what to say to respond.

"I'm sorry," I say looking down too.
"It's not your fault," she says.
"No, I'm sorry about being such a jerk ever since my dad met you," I say looking over.
"I would have, and did, the same thing. I just want you to know that I'm not your wicked stepmother," she says laughing softly.
"Thank you," I say hugging her.
She seems surprised at first but slowly hugged each back.
"No, thank you annabeth, for hearing me out. Something that I wouldn't have ever done at your age, that shows a lot of maturity," she says standing up and grabbing my hand to help me up.

She walks back into the building turning her head when she realizes I'm not following her.
"Oh I'll be right there," I say gesturing for her to go on ahead.
She nods her head and continues walking up the stairs.

"Don't worry mom," I say looking up toward the dark sky, "I haven't forgotten about you yet," I half smile while whipping a tear that softly fell down my cheek.
