"What are you doing here?", I asked him.

"Ms. Molina.  The least you could do is say hello before you start interrogating our new student."

"It's fine Ms. Harrison.  Dahlia was my uh...friend back in Bakersfield."

"Oh, okay then.  Carry on.", she said walking away.

"Why are you here?", I asked again once Ms. Harrison was out of ear-shot.

"My family moved here last week."

"But why here?  And why the music program?  You know how awkward this is going to be for the both of us."

"Maybe I would have known you moved here if you hadn't stopped talking to me.  And besides, it doesn't have to be awkward if we don't want it to be."

I scoffed.  "Fine.",  said walking over to the chairs and taking a seat.

There you have it.  Jackson Williams, my ex-best friend.

My ex-boyfriend.

In middle school we were inseparable.  I pretty much always had a crush on him, but I only got the courage to ask him out last year.  To my surprise, he actually said yes.  Everything was going fine, but I felt like I was the only one who really cared.  Looking back on it, he never gave me one hundred percent.  There was always something that took priority over our relationship.

After about 6 months, he broke up with me.  The next week I saw him with someone.  It had only been a week.  He stopped talking to me completely.  I never got an explanation.

I knew that no matter what, things were going to be really weird.  I just really hoped he would stay in his lane and not try to go back to the way things used to be.

I was only half listening to Ms. Harrison.  Jackson's sudden appearance had triggered some memories I'd rather forget.

"I think we should break up."

I looked at him, in shock.

"What, why?"

"I just don't think this is working out."

"What do you mean?"

*****

"Dahlia."

I was immediately snapped back to reality at the sound of Ms. Harrison's voice.

"Do you mind being Jackson's tour guide for the day?", she asked.  "I figured since you two are friends it would be for the best."

No.

"Yeah sure.", I replied, a fake smile plastered on my face.

"Perfect."  Just then, the bell rang signaling the end of homeroom.  As I gathered my things, Jackson walked up to me.

"Hey, so I guess you're supposed to show me around.", he said awkwardly.

I sighed.  "Okay listen Jackson.  I don't know what you're trying to do, but stop it.  We can't just stop talking for almost a year and then be best friends again."
