note: i'm so sorry i haven't updated this! i've been wanting to but haven't had any motivation and haven't been doing too well. this chapter might be a bit longer than the others. enjoy.
It was time for my third shift. Ray and Frank were practicing in the living room. Mikey offered to walk with me to work. I didn't feel like going by car. I hugged Ray goodbye, feeling his arms wrap around me. "Be safe, okay?" I smiled, fixing my beanie. My head still hurt a lot. "I'll do my best." I replied. Gerard was in the kitchen, sketching. "Be back soon, Mikes." Gerard called out, looking up from his papers. Mikey nodded and we went on our way.
"It's so dark out." Mikey said, putting his hands in his coat pocket. "It really is. Luckily I have limited battery supply!" I exclaimed sarcastically. "How much do they give you?" He asked, adjusting his glasses. "I get a full battery, 100% but it runs out so quick. It's scary. By the time it's four, I only have about 19%." I explained. He furrowed his brow.
"Gosh, I don't know how I'd do in that kind of situation." He finally said. "Trust me, you don't wanna find out." I replied. "At least you're almost done, right?" Mikey asked. I nodded. "It doesn't feel that way at all. It's just going by so slow, I don't know if I'll make it out tonight." I admitted.
"Don't die on us, Kaleb. Not yet at least." Mikey smiled at me. "If I die, you can have all of my beanies." I joked. "Oh, well then that's not so bad." He stated, looking straight ahead. "Mikey! Okay, but seriously, you can have my beanies." I said. "Just don't die, then we can be beanie wearing buddies without any dying." Mikey remarked. "I made it this far, if I die to a bunch of animatronic thingies, I don't know what I'll do." He kicked a rock to the side. "You won't really have to do anything about it, if you do die." Mikey continued. "Yeah, you're right. I don't wanna die yet though. Not right now." I stopped in my tracks. Tears started to form in my eyes but I tried to ignore the thoughts about death. Things at work had been bad enough.
"Hey, you're going to be fine. You've made it to this shift, you only have two more to go! Just do the best you can, and don't die." Mikey told me. He was right, I'm almost finished. I just have to make it out, then I can try to look for a safer job. "I should've listened to Ray." I mumbled. "What about?" Mikey asked. "He told me to look for another job. All the ones I could find were far from here, they paid more but it was like two hours away." I explained. "Then there wasn't much you could do." He said, looking over at me. I bit my lip, seeing that we had arrived at the restaurant.
"I guess this is goodbye?" I said hesitantly. "Could you have said that any more ominous?" Mikey asked with a chuckle. "Bye Mikes, thanks for walking me here. Be safe going back home. Tell everyone I said goodnight. Give Ray a hug for me." I rambled. "Of course. I'll try to remember all of those things. See ya on the other side, K." Mikey replied. We hugged and I made my way inside the restaurant.
I sighed and closed the door behind me. My shoes dragged on the floor as I made my way to the office. It was quiet as usual. The phone rang and I picked it up, putting it to my ear. "Hello, hello? Hey, you're doing great!" The voice spoke. I smiled for a second until the next line came through.
"Most people don't last this long." I stifled a laugh. "I mean, you know, they usually move on to other things by now." I should've definitely done that, I thought to myself. "I'm not implying that they died. Th-th-that's now what I meant." The voice continued. "That's exactly what you meant." I say, even though they can't hear me. "Uh, anyway I better not take up too much of your time. Things start getting real tonight." They say.
As if it wasn't real before?! "Uh...Hey, listen, I had an idea: if you happen to get caught and want to avoid getting stuffed into a Freddy suit, uhh try playing dead!" "That's a horrible idea!" I whisper shouted over them. "You know, go limp. Then there's a chance that, uh, maybe they'll think that you're an empty costume instead." I shook my head, looking through each camera. "Then again if they think you're an empty costume, they might try to...stuff a metal skeleton into you. I wonder how that would work. Yeah, never mind, scratch that. It's best just not to get caught." This person was the only good part about the job. I hope I get to meet them before I finish all my shifts. "Um, okay. I'll leave you to it. See you on the flip side!" They exclaimed.
