Tessa wasn't send up to the maze regularly. The box was sent up 3 days earlier than it normally come up. She was put in the maze for the boys to find.

THEY FOLLOWED GALLY through the chaos, going through alleys to stay low "Newt were almost there" Thomas told Newt "Just leave me" Newt said before another explosions went off in front of them and they had to stop. More people yelling crossed them, and they stayed in place. A huge ship crossed over top of them as they looked up.
"Is that?" Tessa asked
"Brenda— Thats them" Thomas said as they went to pick Newt up to go and get to them.
"No leave me" Newt said, stuff starting to come out of his mouth as they crouched in front of them, Newt breathing heavily.
"Minho, you gotta run ahead and grab the serum and get back to us as soon as you can" Thomas said "Minho"
"He's right. I can cover" Gally siad
"Thank you" Newt said, grabbing Minho's JJs for a minute "thank you Minho"
"Hey, just hang on... you hear me?" Newt nodded and Minho and Gally went off
"Go Minho go!" Tessa yelled after them, turning back to Newt as his veins got darker and breathing got harder
"Thomas" Tessa said, getting his attention and he leaned down to Newt
"Hey, hey newt" Thomas grabbed him and got his full attention "hey we're gonna try this, let's get you up, now" Thomas went to lift Newt up but he did let him
"No" Newt said, grabbing the necklace he was wearing off his neck and held it at Thomas
"Take this!" He said, and Thomas tried to argue "just take it!" He yelled louder "please. Please tommy, please." He begged
"Okay, We need you to give us everything you got you hear me?" Thomas siad and Tessa helped him lift Newt up as then groaned, and started to make their way through the riots.
They got passed the crowd and onto a concrete plain, it got harder for Thomas and Tessa to help Newt walk
"We're almost there just stay with me, come on!" Thomas yelled, jsut before Newt fell out of Boths grip and landed on the ground, Thomas trying to keep him up the hardest.
Thomas and Tessa leaned down beside him, as he let out small breaths. Thomas checked for a heartbeat and than He got up with Tessa so they could start dragging him. They pulled him as far as they could but it was no use. Tessa and Thomas collapsed onto the concrete ground.
