"You look absolutely gorgeous, sweetie."
Aaliyah rubbed her arm nervously and smiled at her mother "Thanks, Mom."
Kennedy then touched Aaliyah's arm and smirked "You look so grown up. I can't believe how fast time has flew by. I remember when you hated the idea of wearing a dress."
The two girls laughed and embraced each other in a hug.
A loud beep interrupted their moment and Aaliyah pulled back quickly.
She patted down her dress and picked up her bag "I'll see you guys later."
She then walked out of the house and heard Kennedy and her parents shout "goodbye!" to her.
Aaliyah opened the car door and joined the car full of girls.
When they arrived at the prom they immediately found a table and joined Rue and Jules who were also there attending.
Cassie looked around the room full of dancing teenagers and sighed "What if these are, like, the big moments in life? Like, my mom always talks about how high school was like this big, monumental part of her life.
But I cannot imagine being 40 and looking back at this, like, 'Wow'." Maddy nodded "Yeah, but that's because most people peak in high school."
Kat shook her head "I definitely haven't peaked, so..." Lexi shook her head "I feel like I'm not even a person yet."
Cassie laughed "Yeah, I'm definitely at, like, 25 percent peakness." Jules took a sip of her drink "I feel like I'm at a hundred. But I can definitely get to 150."
Rue shrugged "Honestly, I never thought I'd make it this far."
Cassie looked at the girl "What do you mean?"
Rue looked down "I don't know. I just always had, like, this overwhelming anxiety that something bad would happen."
Maddy looked at Rue and smirked "In all fairness, last summer, there were, like, three weeks where I thought you were dead."
Jules grabbed her hand and looked at Maddy "Okay, but she's been sober for, like, three months."
Maddy frowned "Weren't you in rehab, like, six months ago?" Aaliyah shared a look with Jules as Rue nodded slowly.
Cassie decided to change the subject quickly "Maybe people are nostalgic about high school 'cause it's, like, the last time in their life that they get to dream. After this is just bad jobs, and bills, and bad husbands. Maybe I'm generalizing, but... I don't know. Do you guys get what I mean?"
Jules shrugged "I don't know. I kind of feel the opposite. I feel like high school's super fucking suffocating."
Cassie's eyes widened "Really?" Jules nodded and then looked at her phone.
