Cassie drunkenly stumbled into the hot tub and fell into Nate.
The boy immediately pushed her off of him and Cassie smiled at Maddy "Happy Birthday!"
Maddy kept her eyes down and smiled "Thank you." BB then started to talk "I'm so happy you guys are back together!"
Maddy shook her head and looked at the girl "We're not back together?"
Cassie looked at Nate "You're not?"
Nate looked down "No."
Maddy scowled at the boy "I mean, I was gonna say no, but why are you saying no?" Nate finally looked up "Um, because we're not."
Aaliyah could tell that Maddy was getting angry "I know, but why do you sound so definitive about it?" Nate frowned at the girl "I wasn't being definitive."
Maddy raised her eyebrows "It sounded like it." Nate shrugged "No, I mean, she just asked a question-"
"-That you didn't have to answer. But you did."
Nate sighed "I don't even know what we're arguing about."
Maddy's eyes widened "You and your tone."
Nate frowned "But we're not back together."
A silence filled the hot tub as the music continued to play in the background.
Nate cleared his throat and looked down "Uh, yet." Maddy shook her head "I mean why don't you say 'we're working it out'?"
Nate started to raise his voice "You literally just said you were gonna say no." Maddy touched her chest "Right but that's me. Meaning that when I say it, it means something totally different than when you say it."
Nate scoffed "Okay, it might seem that way in your head, Maddy, but it's the same word."
Maddy spoke with her hands "Yeah, but it was also the speed in which you said it. It was quick! It was like a reflex!"
She turned to Kat and Aaliyah "It was like his natural instinct, right?" Kat nodded "It was hasty."
Maddy looked at Nate and he laughed "You really think she's gonna disagree with you?"
Kat retaliated "If I disagreed with her then I would. What, you don't think I have a mind of my own?"
Nate sarcastically spoke to her "No I'm sure that you do." Maddy clapped her hands together "Ooh, he's such a cunt!"
Kat scowled at him "What the fuck is your problem?" Aaliyah took this as her cue to step in "Okay, maybe we should do this at another time, Mads."
Maddy ignored her and looked at Nate with disgust "You see, I'm not crazy, right? Because he's always trying to gaslight me ."
He looked at the girl seriously "Look, Lee's right, I don't wanna argue with you right now."
Maddy continued to yell at him "This is why I don't believe when you make all of these promises, and you're like 'Oh, let's get back together. You're the only person in the world I care about. You're a goddess and it's my fault for not treating you like a goddess. I promise, Maddy, I'll change, I'll grow, I'll be better, I don't deserve you but I love you. Please, when I go to college, move with me, marry me, have my babies-"
