Chapter VIII.

"No... It's really...you!?" you gasped, unable to believe who you were seeing. "It can't be-"

He stood before you in the doorway.

He looked like he had been through a war, with cuts and bruises all over his body. You jumped up from the floor and stumbled towards him, the dress restricting your usual fluent movement. Disbelief and shock etched on your face. "Ethan!" You cried out, flapping your arms over him like a tired owl as you held onto him.

"Oh, wow. Uh-" Ethan froze, arms awkwardly holding your hunched form up as he looked to the side. Your hug was sudden and he didn't quite know how to respond.

"What happened to you?" You blurted out, noticing how heavily his chest was heaving, covered in grime and blood.

Ethan; a little confused by your tight embrace, cleared his throat as a sign for you to let go. He wasn't great with such affection from strangers, but he really didn't want to say it directly. Especially not to a person like you who regarded him as such a close friend. You were too kind for a comment like that, he thought.

He put aside his discomfort and answered, the side of the gun awkwardly patting you on your back. Guess you were just glad to see him? "I played some tag with the locals." You hadn't let go of him despite his 'hint' so he tried clearing his throat again, to no avail. Ethan looked to the side again, as if to check if someone was there to 'catch him' doing such an odd thing. Such a vulnerable act. Once clear, he sighed and quickly disarmed himself as he wrapped his arms around you, holding on tightly. You could feel his chest heaving and his heart beating fast, as if he had just escaped death. "Seriously it's... a long story."

"But you're alive." You whispered, a big smile on your face as you held onto him with all your might. "That's what matters. Oh, I'm so glad." You sighed and let go, but felt resistance coming from the man holding you.

"Oh." He looked to the side and let go immediately. Christ, had he gotten so bad at basic social interaction because of online work? 'Fuckin' pull it together, Ethan.' He groaned to himself.

He put his hand on your shoulder in an attempt to soothe you, but accidentally pushed you back a bit. "Oh?" Your lips parted at the suddenness of his movements but you smiled nonetheless, blaming his weird state on his near-death experience. "Are you okay?"
