Chapter Three

My eyes peeled, fluttering quickly before I sat up, my entire body alert. The room around me looked like any normal bedroom, but it wasn't mine. Cautiously, I rose to my feet and walked to the full-length mirror that stood in the corner of the room. My wavy red hair cascaded around my oval shaped face. Brown eyes pierced back into mine as I inspected the subtle specks of orange within my iris. I let my eyes trail down my body, inspecting the tight white tank top and baggy sweatpants I fashioned. Scary thing was, I didn't remember getting changed. They weren't even my clothes. The tank top showed my slightly curvy body, my thin waist and flat stomach looking normal.

From what I could tell, nothing had changed except my eyes. The small orange flecks were surely not there last time I checked. Suddenly remembering my situation, I turned and scanned the room for an exit. Across from me was a plain white door. I paced towards it, scared of what was on the other side.

The scene I saw before me was one I was not expecting. The door led into a short hallway. At the end of that hallway was a living room, where a woman sat, a grin on her face as she laughed at something. A deep, masculine voice spoke to her. Slowly and cautiously, I crept down the hall, the floor squeaking. That's when the woman looked up.

"Ah, Lux, you're up!" She smiled, standing from her place on the couch and gesturing for me to enter the room. I did as she wanted, soon to be greeted by a man. Both people seemed to be near their thirties or forties in age. "Please, take a seat."

"Where are we?" I asked, slowly lowering myself onto the couch. I was confused and scared, not sure if I should try to leave or sit and listen to them.

The woman took a seat next to the man, looking at him as if telling him to speak. "We are in the nurses quarters. This is one of the buildings that is part of S.T.A." He paused taking a breath before continuing. "S.T.A stands for Special Talents Academy. You have shown that you do indeed have a special, or supernatural, ability. This school is meant to teach you how to control your powers. There are dorms inside of the main building, but we have been keeping you here for the past few hours, waiting for you to wake up. Do you have any questions?"

"What happens to my old school? My mom and my house?" I asked, my eyebrows knitted together in thought. I couldn't just drop my entire life just like that, just because I had some ability.

The man sighed as the woman remained silent, her eyes scanning my face. "You will not have any contact with the outside world, except for with your mother. She has known since before you were born that you'd have an ability, due to you're father's supernatural ability. She's kept you safe, making sure that you weren't ever in danger, and that you had constant control of your anger. Your belongings have been packed, curtesy of your mother, and put in a dorm. You can unpack them yourself. As for schooling here, classes will start in two days. You will attend this school until you are able to control yourself enough to be able to manage powers in the real world. This could take months, or years."

 "And my friends?" I queried.

"Your mother has told them that you've gone to a boarding school in Canada, which is pretty much correct. They just don't know why." Nodding, I processed all this new information. I had a 'supernatural ability', was in a school in Canada that sepcialized in training these abilities, and I wasn't allowed to talk to anyone but my mom, other than the people at this school. "Now, Miss Martinez will lead you to your room." We all stood up, the man retreating up a set of stairs. The woman, though, gestured for me to follow her through a large, fancy wooden door.

The sunlight hurt my eyes at first, but they quickly adjusted as I scanned my surroundings. The place was huge! A large, four story buliding stood just on the other side of the field. The walls were made of grey stone, making the place look old and castle-like. Around the giant field of buildings was a forest. The scenery was gorgeous, to be honest. I followed the woman, Ms. Martinez, towards the large building and away from the smaller two-story house.

People scattered around the field, most of them looking to be between the age of sixteen and twenty-two. Some were just talking in groups while others threw a frisbee into the air, rallied with a volleyball or participated in other active things. It seemed like you were at a recreation centre, really.

The atmoshpere changed when I stepped through the main doors. The inside of the building reminded me of any normal high school, although the stone walls added that old, rustic feeling. People were also in the halls, but only a few where scattered here and there. Obviously it wasn't a school day. Ms. Martinez led me straight down the main hallway, turning left once before opening a door into a huge staircase. The stone steps led up to platforms, each platform having a door which led to a new floor. We passed the first door, then the second. Finally, at the very last door, she held it open, allowing me to slip into a busy hall.

I followed her down the hallway, my shyness kicking in for the first time in a long time. A blush heated my cheeks when everyone looked at me. "This, is your room." The woman opened a door, allowing me to enter. It wasn't too small, but not the biggest room in the entire world. It was big for a dorm room. It was still bigger than my old room, though, and that was with filled boxes stacked up all over the place.

"Thank you." I muttered, turning around to watch her give me a small smile before leaving. My eyes caught sight of something shining on a desk just across the room. I quickly walked over to see a slip of paper with a key sat on top of it. The letter's Lux - ROOM 108 were engraved onto the sliver key. Looking at the note, I saw it was a schedule. On it were all my classes, what time they started and ended, as well as lunch time.

Leaving the things on the desk, I quickly started unpacking all of the boxes that laid around my room.  Within two hours, the room was fully unpacked and I had finished organizing everything.

The walls were made of drywall, the paint making the room look really interesting. The front and left walls were painted a nice red, while the right and back walls were painted a dark blue. On the left, red wall, was the desk, a bookshelf and a floating shelf; all of which matched the wall in colour. The back wall had a large, floor-to-cieling window that filled the space between the bookshelf and the bed. Above the bed were two white floating shelves. Carpet covered the floors, causing warmth to cover my bare feet. My bed was covered in a floral duvet, a thinner, red blanket draped at the foot of the bed. On the other end, four pillows sat, their cases matching the duvet. A hanging light in the shape of a ball hung in the center of the room. Compared to the rest of the building, the room was very modern, almost as if it were a room in any normal household.

Just as I was ready to collapse onto the bed, a light knock came from the door. I tiredly paced to the door, slowly pulling it open. I was greeted with a grinning girl. She looked about my age, her dark brown hair cascading down her back in soft curls. Her eyes matched her hair. She was the average height, her body petite as she stood there. "Hi, I'm Hannah." She gave a small wave.

"Hi, I'm Lux. You want to come in?" She nooded as I stepped aside, allowing her to walk in before I closed the door. "How are you?"

"Oh, that really doesn't matter right now." Hannah smiled. Gosh, she was bubbly. "What really matters is that you're here, and nobody knows what your power is. Everybody wants to know what your ability is!" She was practically jumping up and down.

Giving her a funny look, I sighed. "That's what I want to know. One minute, adrenaline is rushing through me and I was in some kind of haze, then I wake up, and I'm here." I shrugged. To be honest, I didn't remember much about what happened the past night. I remember driving to pick up Courtney, and seeing some drunken men attack her, then it's all a blur.

Hannah's face fell slightly. "Well then, everyone out in the hall is going to be disappointed."

"What's your ability?" I asked randomly, not sure if I should let her leave or carry on a conversation.

This made her grin again. "I'm telekinetic. I can move things with my mind, as well as make them change shape or form." She then skipped to the door. "Well, I better get going. I'm in the room right to your left, so come by whenever. Bye, Lux!" With that, she skipped out of the room, not bothering to close the door when she left.

I quickly closed the door before walking to the bed. A sudden exhaustion swept over me as I crawled under the warm covers. My clock read it was seven o'clock at night, meaning I could sleep.

Finally allowing myself, I shut my eyes and drifted into a dreamless oblivion.
