I woke up to the annoying beeping of my alarm clock. A groan escaped my lips as I tried to move my arm, that is, until I realized it was in some sort of cast. Letting my eyes open, I waited for them to adjust to the bright, white atmosphere around me.
"Lux, oh my god I'm so glad you're awake." Nick's voice sounded so worried, and I forgot I was mad at him.
"Where am I? What happened?" I asked, my eyes travelling around the room in search for evidence. I realized I was in a hospital room. In a sudden wave, I remembered the car accident. I remembered watching the semi-truck smash the front of the car and the car rolling. I remember the agonizing pain as I subconsiously stopped the car with wind. That was when I blacked out.
Nick's hand held mine, squeezing it gently. "This is the hospital a few blocks away from your home. The car was slammed into by a semi and rolled several times before stopping upside-down. The driver of the semi called an ambulance. All he suffered was a few scratches and sprained ankle. You broke your right arm, two ribs and had some other problems I can't recall." He paused for a second, taking in a deep, shaky breath. "Jake didn't make it." His voice was barely a whisper. Tears stung my eyes as the words ran through my mind.
Jake didn't make it.
Why? Why did he die and not me? Why am I sitting here with only a few broken bones while he's dead? Why do I deserve to live any more than he did?
"Where did he die?" I asked, wanting to know.
Nick looked down at our intertwined hands. "He was already dead by the time the ambulance had gotten there. You were just barely breathing." He took another shaky breath, his voice full of tears and pain as he spoke. "You almost died, Lux."
I squeezed his hand in an attempt to comfort him. "Why'd you do it?"
He looked up at me, his brows furrowed. "Why'd I do what? Why'd I come? Well, that's pretty easy to answer--"
"No, Nick. Why did you cheat on me?" The question has been nagging at me for the past few days. I mean, we were so happy up until that point. His entire face fell, his brows remained furrowed, but he stuck his tongue out as if he was thinking really hard. "Were you not happy?"
His head snapped up to look me dead in the eye. "I didn't cheat on you, Lux." From the look in his eyes, I could tell he wasn't lying.
"She came out of your room, both of you sweaty with messy hair and--"
"Lux, when I told you it wasn't what it looked like, I wasn't lying. She's my trainer. All the third and fourth year students are offered personal training. We were sweating because we had just finished training." His voice was so desperate. "Have you ever done wrestling or some form of martial arts?" I nodded my head slowly. "You know how afterwards, both you and your partner are all sweaty with messy hair, tired legs? That's all it was, Lux. I promise you. We were just training."
Being a former karate student, I knew exactly what he meant. From the look in his eyes, I saw it was the truth. Nick didn't cheat on me. He may have been a player before me, but he changed. "I think my dad was right when he put us together. He lived for over a hundred years, and out of all the people he'd met, or seen, he partnered us together."
Nick smiled, his hand squeezing mine. "I'm glad you think so." Letting out a little chuckle, I gasped at the pain in my side.
"Hey, Nick?" He raised his brows at me. I managed to smirk despite the pain in my ribs. "I'd love you more if you drugged me up with some pain medication."
A/N: HAHAHAHA OMG I AM SUCH A BAD PERSON. First, I don't update for a week. Second, I kill the hot guy. Third, I come up with the crappiest explanation for why Nick didn't cheat on Lux. DARN.
