It had been a week since your first day and after being taught the ropes you immediately found yourself searching through your quarters cabinets looking for items you would need in order to make potions. You had gotten about a handful of requests from people each day in the castle so you couldn't waste any time. You loved everything about your workspace - the space, the light, the warm atmosphere. But things can be quite confusing sometimes, like how everything was placed in spots you wouldn't normally keep them.
In your free time you would have to organize everything just the way you like it. But for now you would be wondering around the room trying to find the ingredients. You even began sweltering from continuously running around the area. You thanked yourself for heading to the castle early, if you had not you wouldn't have any time to visit your friends again. You wiped your forehead with the back of your hand as you sat on the windowsill.
You had just finished after a couple hours of working hard and you definitely needed a break. You pushed the window open, feeling the light breeze blow against you. You laid your head back against the wall and smiled. The cool wind felt nice after working in a hot room. You forgot how warm it could get when multiple things were brewing in one place, even if the area was large. You looked over at the cluster of potions on the counter across from you.
How would you even deliver those. You barely knew your way around the castle. You would ask your friends but unfortunately they were just as busy as you. Ester was swamped with work so you never really got to see her. But luckily the others could make time to see you, you were very thankful. Your head turned towards the door as you heard someone softly knocking on it. You hopped off of the windowsill and quickly closed the secret room filled with already worn out brewing stands.
You brushed your lap off and walked to the door, turning the handle and pulling it open. Ester was standing there, a huge smile on her face.
"Ester!" You quickly engulfed her into a tight hug.
She laughed into your shoulder. "Hi lass! It's so good to see you."
You pulled away, still holding her hooves. "Yeah it really is. It's been awhile huh."
Ester walked in and sat down on the counter, you closed the door and sat across from her.
"It really has been." She said, looking down at her swinging feet.
"How's work been?"
Her head shot up. "Well let's just say everyone's armor is shit."
You let out a hearty laugh.
"What about you lass? Are you getting used to the work grind?"
You sighed. "Oh i'm definitely used to it by now. I didn't expect to be this busy this early."
A frown appeared on her face as she leaned forward, her elbows resting on her thighs. "Yep, that's work life for you. Constantly swamped with tasks. But hey it looks like you've got every handled."
You chuckled softly. "Well not everything. I haven't finished working just yet. In fact I should probably deliver those potions right about now." You hopped down from the counter and walked to where the potions sat. "I just wished I knew this place better."
Ester got up too and placed her hoof on your shoulder. "If you'd like I can show you those secret passageways I told you about." She smiled at you. "It's much easier than walking through that maze."
You faced her. "Please show me if you have time."
She let out a short laugh. "Of course I have time, I finished all my work today."
You hugged her. "Great, thank you so much your a life saver."
"No problem Y/n. Now hurry up and pack up the potions."
You let go of her and grabbed a wicker basket from inside a cabinet. Earlier you had cleverly thought of labeling each one by cutting out small tags and tying it around the bottle with twine so you wouldn't forget which belonged to who. You carefully set each potion in the basket, then covered it with a small cloth.
"Alright, let's go!" Ester grabbed the basket and lead you out.
The two of you walked through the normal route but instead of taking the usual right at the weird painting of pig Mona Lisa, you turned left where a wall stood in front of you. Ester handed you the basket as she touched the wall. As soon as her hoof lied on top of a loose part of the wall, it sunk in. The wallpaper covered door swung open, a cold light breeze blew in your direction as it did. Ester walked in first, she gestured for you to come in too. As you walked in Ester grabbed a box of matches from her pocket.
While she was taking care of the light you quietly closed the door. You felt a chill run up your spine as darkness surrounded you. You squinted as sparks started to fly onto the torch, the area around you was now bright enough to see. You were about to speak when Ester quickly covered your mouth.
"We can't talk here or else we'll get caught." She whispered, removing her hand.
You nodded before walking forward. Your footsteps echoed against the old cobblestone walls. You looked around you seeing a couple of dark passageways - they must've lead to different places around the castle. Ester came to a stop without you knowing, causing you to accidentally bump into her. You mouthed 'sorry' to her, she held up a thumbs up signaling it was okay. She faced the wall again and pushed it. It slowly creaked open, light peeking through the cracks. You let out a sigh of relief once it was nice and bright.
Ester stepped down holding the door, you hurriedly followed her. She looked around before closing the door again.
She laughed now that she didn't have to keep quiet. "I know it's a little nerve racking being in there but it gets easier each time you travel that way." She stepped aside to let you get to the door.
"That definitely was quicker but how do you know which way to go?"
Her eyes widened. "Oh right I forgot about that part." She pulled an old rolled up paper from out of her pocket. "This is a map of the system. It tells you which way to go." She handed it to you. "Plus each door has a sign next to it so if you lose the map you can just find look for that instead."
You smiled. "Thank you so much Ester your a life saver."
She opened the entryway and walked in. "No problem lass, i'm gonna head back now but good luck!"
You waved her goodbye as the passage way shut. You turned to the door, fixing your posture before knocking. It wasn't long till someone answered it.
