Pyrra smiled at the laughable group before her. Port and Goodwitch lead the small group. Ruby and Weiss silently followed. The middle four, Yang, Blake, Nora, and Ren, were the main source of conversation. At the back was Pyrrah and Jaune, followed by Jet. There was something strange about Jet's aura that bothered Pyrrah. The group walked briskly through the trees. Each of the students was to collect either a Beowulf fang or an Ursa pelt. Once they reached a clearing, Port stopped to address the students. "As of right now, you have one hour to collect one of the appropriate items" he said, holding his blunderbuss in the air "let the hunt begin!". He pulled the trigger and the students were off. Pyrrah tore through the trees, in search of her Grimm prey. She slowed down before coming to a stop. She listened carefully, waiting for a sign of movement. Their was a rustling in the bushes to her right. She quickly drew her spear and sent it flying into the bushes. There was a squeal then a dull "thunk". She poked her head through the bushes, to see Jaune hanging from a tree by his hood. "Oh sorry Jaune" she said with a giggle.
"It's alright" he said with a chuckle "I'm getting used to it."
Pyrra helped him down. She found the casual but clueless way he handled the situation extremely cute. "Well, we might as well work together now" Pyrrah said. "Y-yeah" Jaune agreed.
The two meandered through the trees, both listening carefully. Though neither spoke, they were silently enjoying each others company.
"Stop" Juane said, holding his arm in Pyrrah's way.
"What is it?" Pyrrah asked.
"Just, listen" he said.
Pyrrah listened carefully, not hearing anything at first. She listened for a couple seconds before she heard it. The distant howling, the sign that a pack of Beowulf had found there prey. Pyrrah smiled at Jaune.
"Let's move" he said.
The two were off, dashing through the trees and underbrush. While Jaune was somewhat lacking in combat, he was incredibly swift on his feet. Even Pyrrah had trouble keeping up with him. They ran for a couple minutes before coming into the clearing where the Beowulf had been. The horrific sight made Pyrrah gasp. The mutilated corpses of an entire pack of Beowulf were scattered around the clearing, along with uprooted trees. Jaune took a couple steps forward, then kneeled to observe a crater in the ground. Pyrrah knelt next to him. She noticed her friend looked a little green.
"Hey, are you okay?" She asked, putting a hand on his shoulder.
"Yeah, just a little squeamish" he chuckled. He looked back at the crater, which was about four yards in diameter and two in depth.
"Whatever did this must have been enormous" he noted, standing up and walking over to another crater. Suddenly something flew out of the woods at Jaune. Pyrrah had mere seconds to react. She lunged at Jaune, shoving him out of the way. She was hit and sent flying against a tree. She hit the ground hard, her vision was blurring. She pulled out her scroll and called Ruby, before losing consciousness.
Jaune didn't know what was happening. He felt Pyrrah push him, then heard something hit a tree. He regained his footing and came face-to-face with a monster he had never seen before. It's head looked similar to that of an Ursa head, while it's body looked to be that of a muscular, oversized gorilla. It stood about nine meters tall, and had humongous hands that appeared to be for smashing things. Jaune's eyes darted around desperately searching for Pyrrah. He spotted her to the left of the beast, lying unconscious on the ground.
"Pyrrah!" He called, going to rush to her side. The creature swung at him with a backhand. He quickly activated his shield and blocked it. He was sent back a couple paces. He glared at the creature before him. Anger was somewhat of a new feeling for him, especially at this caliber. He drew his sword and charged the creature. It raised it's fist and brought it down like a gavel. Jaune rolled out of the way, then lunged at it. The sword sank in to the beast's abdomen. It let out a cry of pain, batting Jaune away. He landed next to Pyrrah. He slowly sat up, his whole body was sore. He was certain that he was covered in bruises.
"Jaune" Pyrra mumbled, slowly rolling to her back "are you alright?"
"Me!?" He cried, coming to her side "your the one who got hit!"
She raised a hand which Jaune took into his own. "Just get out of here" she said, smiling at him "please?"
Pyrrah didn't care what happened to her, she just wanted him to be safe. He looked at her with sullen eyes. His gaze dropped to the ground, before looking back at her with determination in his eyes. "No" he said, standing and turning to face the Grimm "I won't leave you!"
Pyrrah's face grew red. Jaune blocked a punch with his shield, then slashed at the monster's throat, but he was swatted away. The blonde could feel rage building inside him. He still managed to get up. He swung at the beast again, but it caught his sword by the blade, and broke is in half. He put up his shield to block it's attack, but it shattered and he was sent against a tree.
"Jaune!" Pyrrah cried, trying to get up. It was no good, she had been hit directly by the monster, and had taken more damage. The Grimm must have heard her, because it's attention was now on her. It picked up part of a broken tree and threw it at her. Juane felt something inside him snap. Pyrrah closed her eyes and braced for the impact. She heard the tree hit and splinter, but she didn't feel the impact. She opened her eyes, and was surprised to find Jaune standing between her and the Grimm. He was facing her, his aura glowing brightly. The beast charged at him, a gargantuan fist raised. Jaune threw a punch of his own. There was a deafening snap, and the Grimm let out a cry of pain. Jaune jumped impossibly high, then came down on his enemy with a force that seemed inhuman. The beast toppled forward, hit the ground with a crunch. Jaune's aura dissipated and we went to Pyrrah's side. He wordlessly picked her up, then began to head back to the clearing where the professors were.
They were both silent for a while. "Jaune..." Pyrrah said, breaking the silence "a-are you okay?"
"Yeah, what about you?"
"I'm still pretty shaken up, and I hurt all over, but I'm glad you're okay" she said, putting her arms around his neck and resting her head on his chest.
They walked a little longer before running into Ruby and Jet. "Guys!" Ruby cried "I got your call! What happened!?"
"We'll talk about it later, Pyrrah needs help" Jaune said.
"Do you want me to take her?" Jet asked.
"N-no" Jaune said "I can carry her."
Jaune continued his march back. Ruby and Jet walked at each of his sides, like protective guardians. Once they had gotten to the professors, he gingerly laid down Pyrrah, then collapsed from exhaustion.
