Chapter Nine - News

Blake scanned through the news on her scroll. She had been keeping up with the Black Claw stories. The latest news was of the vigilante stopping two Dust robberies within mere hours of each other. She was reading the article when she got a call from Ruby. 

"Hello?" She answered. 

"Blake! You've gotta check out the latest student news update!" Ruby's voice said. 

"Okay, I'll check that out now" said Blake "bye." 

"Bye!" Ruby said.

Blake did as Ruby said and checked the latest student news. The video began and Blake was met with the usual pair, a blonde girl with green eyes and a red haired student with brown eyes. 

"Hello I'm Zack, and this is Jill, and you're watching Beacon News" said the boy. 

"Yesterday there was a huge upset at the talent competition, when the judges announced dancer Melody Smith as the winner, rather then the crowd pleasing band, RWBY and the Purple Phoenix. After the crowd voiced it's discontent, the band came back onstage, here is some footage of the encore" said Jill. 

The screen changed to a recording of them onstage. Jet went through his speech and then they began to play. When they were up on stage, Blake really hadn't had the chance to see the way the fans reacted, or how well they actually played. She smiled slightly, enjoying the music. Once it ended, the screen went back to the anchors. 

"It's obvious that this group has become an overnight sensation, but we still went to the halls of Beacon to ask some of the students their opinions" Zack said. 

The screen cut to the face of a cheerful student with a buzz cut. 

"They're awesome, they play great" he said. 

Next was a blonde girl in pigtails. "I love them, they're so great, and I have a huge crush on Jet" she said. One after another students commented on them.

"I haven't actually gotten to see them, but my friend showed me a recording and I really want to"

"I'm not their biggest fan, but I definitely like them"

"I don't like them, I mean, what's the message?"

"I loved their encore, they should have a concert!"

Blake laughed when Cardin came onscreen. 

"They're alright" he said "they play good music, but I have a history with Fitzgerald." 

The screen changed back to Zack and Jill. "We also had the opportunity to interview the man behind the band, Jet Fitzgerald" said Jill.

Jet came onscreen, sitting back in his chair. "What started your band?" An offscreen interviewer asked.

"Uh, one day I was in the schoolyard with Yang, Blake, and Ruby. I was playing my guitar, when Yang suggested we start a band"

"Did any of you need to learn an instrument for this"

"Yes, I taught Ruby to play bass and Weiss is still learning to play violin"

"Do the songs you play have names?"

"Every song has a name, ours are no different. The one we played for our audition was 'Mirror Mirror', the one we played during the competition was 'Red Like Roses', our encore song was named 'I May Fall'"

"Do you have any guess as to why you didn't win?"

"I know exactly why we didn't win"

"Mind sharing?"

"Well I suppose it doesn't really matter now. Professor Ozpin is my father, and he didn't want to play favorites, being a judge. I changed my last name to my mother's maiden name before enrolling at Beacon"

"What do you see in your group's future?"

"We'll probably be making a few more appearances for our fans" he winked at the camera.

"Any last comments?"

"Nope"

"Thank you for the interview"

"My pleasure"

Blake turned off the Beacon news, and went back to the newspaper. There was a new article, entitled; "The Black Claw: Defender of the Faunas". Blake opened it and began to read.

In an act of racial violence, a student attending Beacon Academy was attacked today for her Faunas heritage. Student Velvet Scarlatina was assaulted by a group of masked men. She was defended by her friend Coco Adel, but the two were overcome. "I thought we were going to be killed" said Coco "until that person showed up. It was impossible to tell if it was male or female because on top of being completely concealed by dark clothing, they moved to fast. They didn't even use a weapon to defeat the attackers. I'm glad someone like that is on our side". The police have issued a warrant for the arrest of Black Claw-

Blake turned off her scroll, not caring to read the rest. "I need to meet them" she said "the Black Claw".
