Carrying the banner

Chapter 3

Y/N POV 

I had awoken with a tear stained face and a scream had escaped my lips but I hadn't noticed. Race ran right over to me followed by Albert. They wanted to see if I was okay. But I wasn't even sure if I was. My dreaming was brought back to the alley with the Delanceys and what they did to me. I don't remember much other than crying into Race's shoulder and passing out again. 

RACES POV 

I heard a blood curdling scream as I looked so see Y/N hyperventilating and crying. I jumped out of bed to comfort her. I wrapped my arms around her bringing her into a hug. She sobbed into my shirt wetting it but I didn't mind. I didn't know what had happened but I just stroked her hair trying to calm her down. I looked over at the window and noticed it was still the middle of the night. Albert and Jojo looked at the crying Y/N in my arms with sorrowful looks in their eyes.

"Y/N what happened?" I cooed into her ear. That calmed her down a little but not much. She continued to cry as I held her. Albert sat next to us speaking up "Y/N it's okay we're here for you" while patting her back she calmed down a bit more until there were no more sobs. 

I heard light snores escape her mouth and I realized she was out cold.  I moved her back to her original position and sat next to her rubbing her back. She started breathing fast again so I gave her another hug in which she calmed down. 

(The next morning) 

I awoke by the sounds of the rowdy boys. Just then I saw a peacefully sleeping Y/N. Her eyes fluttered open as I realized we had passed out next to each other. Her beautiful E/C eyes looked into my blue eyes. 

Just then Jack knocked on the door peering in and saying "Oooh Racer looks like you had an eventful night". I felt my face go red as I shot up out of Y/N's bed. I heard laughs escape Jojo's mouth and Albert just walked out but I shrugged it off. "Y/N are you feeling better after last night" said Jojo "Yeah Uh what happened"I asked her. "Huh what happened last night other than Race gettin Busy wit-" "JACK" I screeched. All he did is laugh which embarrassed me as my face got even more red. 

"I had a nightmare about the alley yesterday" Y/N said her face soft looking but also scared. "Oh I'se sorry 'bout dat" Jack said. Y/N just gave a slight smile. "How did ya sleep besides dat?" Jack asked "Really well thank you so much for letting me stay". "If you ever need a place to stay the lodging house is always open" Jack smiled and walked away as Albert walked back in the room.

"Thank you so much for everything but I really should be getting going" said Y/N. "Where" I asked a bit disappointed. I only knew Y/N for a day but I knew she was an orphan and more importantly I really liked spending time with her. "I dunno I don't have a job so I'm not really sure" before she could say anything I grabbed her hand and we were strolling down the stairs. We made it out the door where Jack was an asked"So Y/N does not have a job and I was wondering If she would be able to work as a Newsie?" I asked hopeful. "Sure" Jack said "We have room". "Race and Albert show her what ta do" Jack says. 

"I don't remember signing up to be a newsie" Y/N said "Well I figured you didn't have anything else going on" I joked as she laughed. "Well it looks like now I'm a newsie" she smiled

Y/N, Albert and I got in line. She froze as she saw who was working the counter.  Albert and I looked at each other we saw the fear etched on Y/N's face. Albert whispered to me "You pay for the papes and I'll take her away from here" and he dropped some coins in my hands. 

Albert whisked Y/N away from the Delanceys. And I met them at our selling spot. It looked like Albert already showed her the ropes as she was smiling and waving papes. A small but happy sigh came from my mouth it made me happy watching Y/N.
