A week has passed since Korra's fight with Oni and she still hasn't woken up from her comma. Asami arrives every morning and evening to await her awakening, but so far her patience has not been rewarded. Although Asami isn't religious, she wasn't able to do anything but pray for her safe return.
In the meantime, Korra has been dreaming about Asami in this realm of her own imagination. The spirit who looks like Asami is sitting at the edge of a pond as she hums a soothing tone. Korra walks up to her friend as they both greet each other. The last thing she remembered was fighting Oni, so arriving in this province of hers was something entirely new. Nothing seemed to matter the second she notices Asami smiling at her.
In this world, the sun shined brightly against the grass plains as the calm phantoms roamed around the sky. Korra sits next to Asami as she is twirling her legs around the water, sitting at the edge of the pond. Turning to her left, she notices Asami staring at her with a cheerful smile. The winds blow towards their direction, causing Asami's hair to flow with the breeze. Noticing Korra staring deep into her eyes, Asami began pondering about her glance.
"Is there something wrong?" the spectre asked.
"Nope, just enjoying the scenery," Korra stated.
Korra was more than happy in this dream of hers. Unlike reality, it was calm, quiet, and vibrant with nature. Best of all, it was only Asami and her together. To Korra, if this was the afterlife, then she was content with the results. Being entranced in Asami's eyes, Korra couldn't help but ponder whether it was even worth it to return to the real world. In this dream, Korra could do anything she wanted, she could spend time with Asami, she could swim around the pond as if nothing was wrong in her life. But most importantly, Korra can kiss Asami without thinking of any repercussions. Staring at this pigmentation of her friend, Korra slowly reaches into Asami's face and begins kissing her. Swirling her tongue through the insides of her friend, Asami gently moves her lips away from Korra's.
"What is wrong?" Korra asked.
"You know this is just a dream right?" the spectre questioned.
"I know..." Korra responded with a content look.
"Then why are you still here? Asami is still waiting for you, isn't she." the spectre inquires.
"If I go back, I won't be able to kiss Asami like this." Korra answers.
"But isn't that something you want to find out for sure?" the spectre continued.
She is too frightened to ascertain whether they would only remain as great acquaintances as doing so could destroy her emotions completely. If Asami claimed that she only considered her as a friend, Korra no longer feels obligated to do anything anymore. Korra's main reason why she moved back to Republic City was because of Asami. Korra lives to spend every waking second with the person she loves. If Asami didn't share the same feelings, Korra is afraid the friendship would only get awkward, causing them to drift further away from each other.
In this fantasy, Korra can make her wishes into an immediate reality. She could spend every living second with Asami and potentially raise a family of their own if she wanted to. In conclusion, Korra is fearful of taking a leap of faith.
What Korra is scared of most, however, is whether Asami still has feelings for Mako. Although she never confirmed this herself, Korra was too hesitant to ask. She doesn't want to believe that Asami is still attached to Mako and that she still has some hidden animosity towards her. After all, Mako dumped Asami for Korra, only for them to break up in the long run. In her dream, everything seemed so perfect and simple to her own image. Reality had so many backlashes, responsibilities, and enemies that it no longer seemed appealing to continue onwards.
To Korra, the best world to live in is a world of ignorance. Every time Korra had the urge to tell Asami about her feelings back in the physical world, Korra always puts her emotions aside and allows fear to consume her. Whenever her chest starts aching after talking to Asami, she would whisper to herself, "Ignorance is bliss," and continue her day as if nothing had happened.
Korra's dream didn't have any of these issues she considered. It was a utopia...
But to humans, utopias are never enough as they aren't the real thing. Hearing the Avatar speak, the spectre begins to ask more thought-provoking questions about Korra's decision to live in this delusion.
"What about Asami?" the spectre stated.
"She loves Mako. She only reached out to me only because she wanted me to avenge his death." Korra lied to herself.
"But you tell yourself you caused his death. Then why did she come to see you at all? You just don't want her to say 'you're only friends' huh?" the phantom exposes.
"Definitely...." Korra answered.
"Korra, you know you have to return to the real world. You need to return to Asami. She needs you more than ever. It doesn't matter what you think, Asami is your friend. It doesn't matter if she has feelings for you or not. You know the world is bitter and cold. If you care about Asami so much, then make the world better for the two of you." the spectre points out.
Finally admitting her selfish flaws, Korra decides to head back to the real world as an illuminated portal behind her starts opening. Looking back at the person she was talking to, Korra was curious as to who she was really talking to. She knew it wasn't Asami based on her speech patterns. The voice was very familiar, but Korra was unable to finalize who the person was. Not being able to pinpoint who she was talking to, Korra politely asked instead.
"Who are you?" Korra asked.
"Who do you think? I'm you're subconscious. You knew you couldn't stay dreaming forever, even before we started talking." the spectre stated.
"Of course you are.." Korra exclaimed to herself.
Korra smiled as she fully accepted her circumstance and was content with the overall soliloquy. Enter through the portal, Korra wakes up seeing led lights in front of her. She turns to her side and notices Asami patiently waiting for Korra's return. Korra was satisfied to be greeted with such a beautiful face for her return.
