"I asked the same thing," said Vanya, turning to face Five. "In the end, I had to project my consciousness forward into a suspended quantum state version of myself that exists across every possible instance of time." I nodded my head in understanding. "That makes no sense," said Diego while looking at the ground. "Well, it would if you were smarter," I said while taking a sip of my coffee. Diego almost got up to try and fight me, but Vanya glared at him, so he sat back down.
"Basically, it is much harder to travel forward in time than it is to travel backward, as to travel to the future you only have to accelerate along your same time-space curve at greater speed. This means that Five isn't magically appearing somewhere – he's just moving way faster than the human eye can register," I said, trying to help him. He still looked confused, so I sighed and gave up. Five gazed at me with wonder. I smirked and said, "Carry on." "How long were you there," asked Luther, turning to face Five. "45 years, give or take," he replied. "So... so you're saying you're 58," asked Luther.
"No, pea brain, his consciousness if 58. His body is 13 again," I replied snarkily. "He probably was only able to carry his consciousness forward, and not his body, which resulted in this... mess," I said before rolling my eyes. "Delores kept saying the equation was off. Bet she's laughing now," muttered Five while facing away from the rest of us. "Delores," asked Vanya, confused. He ignored her and picked up the newspaper. "Guess I missed the funeral," said Five. "How do you know about that," asked Luther, confused again. "What part of the future do you not understand," Five and I asked him in unison. "Now there are two of you," he mumbled under his breath. "Heart failure, huh," said Five, ignoring Luther's words but gazing at me. "Yeah," said Diego while Luther said no.
"Nice to see nothing's changed," said Five in response to their replies. "That's it? That's all you have to say," called Allision as he started walking out of the room. "What else is there to say? The circle of life," he called out as he left. "Well... that was interesting," said Luther after Five left. A few minutes later Vanya got up and I followed her. She went to the fireplace, where Five stood, looking at his painting. "Nice to know dad didn't forget me," said Five, still facing the painting. "Read your book, by the way. Found it in a library that was still standing. I thought it was pretty good, all things considered. Yeah, definitely ballsy, giving up the family secrets. Sure that went over well," he continued, walking around Vanya and me. "They hate me," said Vanya as I grabbed her hand and rubbed my thumb against her knuckles. "Oh, there are worse things that can happen. I mean, you have a daughter," He said, looking at me.
"Hi... I am Y/N Y/L/N. And you, I take it, are the only intelligent person in this house other than mom," I said, smiling cheekily. I stuck my hand out, the coffee cup in my other hand. He chuckled and grabbed it while saying, "And you seem to be the only person other than your mom I can have a rational conversation with." I broke the handshake and went back next to Vanya. "I adopted her," offered Vanya to Five. "Hmm," he hummed. "This coffee sucks," I told Vanya, sighing sadly. Five grabbed it from my hand and took a sip. "Better than nothing," he said, continuing to drink my coffee. I rolled my eyes and became quiet.
"Was it bad, what happened to Ben," said Five, breaking the minute-long silence. Vanya just nodded her head. I sighed sadly. I had really wanted to meet Ben since he was very sweet according to my mom.
Sometime later, we all went outside for the funeral. Everyone had black umbrellas or nothing, except Klaus, who had a pink umbrella for some reason. "Did something happen," asked Grace in her sweet voice. I was confused, was something wrong with her? "Dad died, remember," said Allison, looking confused too. "Oh, yes of course," said Grace, becoming sad all of a sudden. "Is mom okay," asked Allison to the rest of us. "Yeah, yeah, she's fine. She just needs to rest. You know recharge," said Diego a little defensively. "Whenever you are ready, dear boy," said Pogo to Luther. As Luther tipped over the jar, the ashes fell directly down onto the wet cement, making me wince. "Probably would have been better with some wind," said Luther, looking at the rest of us. "Yeah, no shit," I said a little too loudly, causing a suspicious amount of coughs. Pogo proceeded to speak about Sir Reginald Hargreeves. "He was a monster," interrupted Diego, glaring at the pile of ashes. Klaus and I started laughing. I moved away from Vanya and next to Klaus. He smiled at me cheekily, and I smiled back. I proceeded to look at the sat between the three older siblings. "The tea is spilling," I whispered loud enough for Klaus and Five to hear as Diego talked about Luther and the moon. Klaus chortled as I smiled widely. Five just looked at the two brothers fighting with a stone-cold expression. I looked away from him and back to the fight.
Suddenly, Diego and Luther started hitting each other. Klaus moved to shield Five and me. I moved behind Klaus while Five shoved Klaus's arm away. I winced a little each time I heard the impact of a punch. My breathing picked up, and tears stung my eyes. My heart felt like it was beating out of my chest and my palms became sweaty. Vanya looked at me concerned, knowing about my trauma. She looked almost as anxious as me as if she was feeling what I was feeling. No one else seemed to notice me cowering behind Klaus. I wiped my hands on the skirt of my dress, wanting to go towards Vanya. But she was closer to the fight, so it wouldn't be a smart move. I continued to stand behind Klaus, trying to stop my tears from falling. "STOP IT," yelled Vanya, looking at me with growing agitation, while Klaus egged their fight on. I tried to leave but I felt frozen, staring in horror at the two men fighting, flinching ever so often. And no one, not even I, noticed the flower pot breaking in response to my feelings of anger and anxiety. Just as Vanya moved towards me, a statue fell. "And there goes Ben's statue," said Allison, annoyed with the two men. Diego suddenly threw a knife at Luther, causing the larger man to start bleeding. "You never know when to stop, do you," said Vanya as she immediately rushed to me and enveloped me in a hug. Everyone left, including Grace, leaving Vanya and me outside alone. When I was certain we were alone, I started crying softly into Vanya's shoulder. "Shhh, shhh, it's ok sweetie," she said to me, trying to console me. Around 10 minutes later, I felt better and I told Vanya to go inside. I walked towards Ben's fallen statue. "I wish I could meet you," I murmured before turning on my heel and walking away sadly. I walked in to see Vanya leaning against the door frame. "Ok sweetie, let's go pack up," she told me. I went up to one of the extra rooms where my bag was kept. I slung the leather backpack on my back. It was black with rose gold zips and my name engraved with rose gold ink. Vanya had bought it for me for Christmas. I went down to the front door where Vanya was eating her pill. "Don't waste your time," said Vanya to someone I couldn't see, "Diego's right, I shouldn't have come." "This is your home, and always will be," said Pogo's voice. "Should I get you a taxi," he continued. "I already called one. But, thanks," said Vanya. "That's me," she said when a car honked. I walked up to Vanya and she grabbed my hand. "Uh... I hope you know your father loved you very much. In his own way," he said when Vanya turned towards the door. "Yeah, well, that's kind of the problem, isn't it? Take care of yourself," she said while leaving. "You as well, Miss Vanya," said Pogo before she and I left the house and entered the taxi.
After a long ride, we finally reached home. I unlocked the door and walked straight to the coffee machine. "Mom, I'm making coffee," I called out to her as she came in. Just as I was about to turn the light on, the lamp on the coffee table turned on. "GOD," Vanya and I called out together when we saw Five sitting on the chair. "Don't mind if I have one myself," Five said to me. I nodded and added more water. "You should have locks on your windows," he continued, now looking at Vanya. "I live on the second floor," sighed Vanya, placing the house keys on the shoe rack. "Rapists can climb," said Five matter-of-factly, making me shudder a little. "Cold," asked Five turning to me. "Just a bit," I lied, pulling on a black hoodie on top of the dress I had worn all day. "You are so weird," said Vanya, making me laugh. When the coffee was done, I poured it out into three cups, placing them on the coffee table. I sat down on the couch on Five's left while Vanya sat opposite to me on the other couch. "Is that blood," I asked Five, looking at his arm. Vanya looked at him with concern. "It's nothing," he replied nonchalantly. "Why are you here," asked Vanya. "I have decided you two are the only ones I can trust," he replied seriously. I was honored that he trusted me. "Why me," asked Vanya, wanting more information. "Because you are ordinary," he replied tactlessly. I could see sadness wash over Vanya's face. I slapped Five's arm. He looked at me, surprised by the contact. I glared at him then pointed towards Vanya with my eyes, who was looking at the floor, downcast. "Because you'll listen," he corrected, turning back to Vanya.
I looked at the wound once again and sighed. I got up and got the medical supplies from the cabinet in the bathroom. "Sleeve up," I commanded, sitting down on the same couch where Vanya was sitting. "Huh? No, I'm fine," he shrugged, going to tell something to Vanya. "Sleeve. Up. Now," I directed forcefully. "Just do it, Five, Y/N here is really stubborn," said Vanya with a hint of a smile in her voice. He sighed before pulling his sleeve up. I quickly and expertly started sanitizing and bandaging his very deep cut.
"When I jumped forward and got stuck in the future, do you know what I found? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. As far as I could tell, I was the last person left alive. I never figured out what killed the human race, but I did find something else. The date it happens," said Five to me and Vanya as I cleaned his cut. I was shocked and sad to see how upset he seemed. His eyebrows were scrunched together as he told us everything. It made me believe in everything he was saying. "The world ends in 8 days, and I have no idea how to stop it," he finished, looking earnestly at Vanya. He then picked up his coffee, letting the weight of his last words fill the room.
